U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions sought Saturday to convince Texas Republicans that Donald Trump is the conservative leader needed to change Washington.
The American people are not happy, the Alabama Republican told delegates at the state GOP convention in Dallas. They are looking for something different.
Session said Trump would properly overhaul the nations immigration system and secure the southern border.
Hes going to build a wall to ensure that, Sessions said.
Sessions said Trump, as president, would appoint conservative justices to the Supreme Court, reverse bad trade deals and rebuild the military.
Donald Trump believes in a strong national defense, Sessions said. Peace through strength. Thats conservative.
Sessions appeared at the convention as a representative of Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee who is busy convincing Republican leaders that he can be the partys standard bearer.
For days, rumors swirled that Trump would drop by the convention. The New York businessman was invited by Sen. John Cornyn and others.
Earlier Saturday, Ted Cruz, who Trump vanquished with a win in Indiana, addressed the convention. He didnt say Trumps name.
But throughout the convention, delegates seemed willing to give Trump a chance, and they greeted Sessions and his message with applause.
The senator said Trump would beat likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton by scrambling the typical electoral map, putting Rust Belt states like Michigan and Pennsylvania in play. Session lamented that Republicans were no longer appealing to working-class voters, save for Trump.
You cannot get killed like that and win elections, Sessions said of the 2012 campaign of Mitt Romney. Were not talking to them. Weve lost those voters.
Trump is reaching them.

Trump is fortunate to have Senator Sessions as a friend and surrogate on the campaign trail. The republican party leadership in Texas needs to call for unity. Their leader should step-up to the plate and fill the void that Cruz left since he is not a uniting force against the opposition party and Hillary Clinton.
Mechler needs to push for unification and move forward so that the delegation is supportive of Trump in two months at the convention. He needs to steer the delegates and take over where Cruz has failed to unite them against the opposition.
Tom Mechler was just reelected head of the Texas GOP. He was supported by Rick Perry and others.
In a written statement, Mechler said the GOP is strongest when we are united and I look forward to working each and every day to keep the [Texas GOP] the most dominant state party in the country. Today, the work begins to demolish the Democrats this November.
>>> But throughout the convention, delegates seemed willing to give Trump a chance, and they greeted Sessions and his message with applause. <<<
So earlier report of some delegates walked out after Cruz speech was greatly exaggerated?
No, not exaggerated. AP, CNN and the others stated “many delegates left” and there’s this—
They claim Sessions spoke to a crowd, nearly half the size.
>>So Texas delegates fly or drive 3-9 hours to Dallas and they cant be bothered to listen to Senator Sessions speak. While Jeff speaks, some hold signs that say, Thank you Ted. Never mind that the Delegates are there to represent 3 million Republican voters from Texas. <<
From the article:
Cruz welcomed by supporters waving Thank you Ted signs didnt even once utter the name of Donald Trump.
And he didnt talk about a need to unite behind Trump to beat Democratic presumptive presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, which rankled some delegates.
I couldnt believe Cruz didnt say something about unifying behind the presumptive nominee, said Pat Carlson, a Fort Worth delegate, Trump supporter and former chairwoman of the Tarrant County Republican Party. He only gave his campaign speech.
But the need to unite behind Trump was mentioned Saturday by a campaign surrogate for the billionaire, U.S. Rep. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala.
LETS PUT THIS TOUGH PRIMARY BEHIND US. ... WE CAN AND WILL UNITE.
Sessions spoke after Cruz, to a crowd about half the size, encouraged Texans to rally behind Trump who has promised to address key issues- the economy and immigration.
This is a critical election, he said, as some delegates raised signs that read Thank you Ted and Go Trump.
Lets put this tough primary behind us, he said. We can and will unite.

Thank you, I also read your other linked article about the 5 things from Texas Republican Convention.
Senator Sessions gets it. If only that crying little jackass Ryan has yet to learn. Ryan continues like he means something. Come January, we may get rid of the turncoat.
Trump for President.
This confirms what we have been hearing:
“Before Sessions took the stage, the party chairman implored delegates heading for the exits following Cruzs speech to stick around.”
Cruz delegates were rude and not committed to representing the people of Texas and the republican party.
Typical message(s) I got from other opinion sites is similar to the following -
“No, my low opinion of the voters in Republican primaries is because Donald Trump is scum, and because a mob of rubes and boobs rushed to vote for him.”
“You have no point; Trump is not acceptable. If you believe he is, you are a rube and/or a boob.”
Everything about Cruz’s campaign, from his rude delegates and supporters and unethical staff, show me that Cruz is not what I thought he was. It became more and more apparent with each primary when he was getting desperate.
Don’t let them get you down. What sites do you frequent? They should be responding at a higher level than that unless it’s for grade school kids.
Cruz never really had a strong chance of winning because he polls very low in battleground states and the South.
He was funded with tens of millions of dollars BEFORE the campaign started and a pretty penny was spent conducting private polling and analyzing internal data to determine ‘where he could win.’
It is not by chance that they targeted tiny caucus states and his father flew to places like North Dakota last summer. He appealed to a small faction within the republican party and has zero cross-over appeal.
Trump is a proven winner and very successful businessman. He will win.
No worries, I am not down from those insults.
It just shows you the extent of some Cruz Anti-Trump supporters’ vocabulary when you tried to communicate ideas with them. There is no dialogue with them.
And usually those remarks were upticked/liked multiple times.
Yes. It became very obvious. Ted is on a mission for himself-not America. He needs to unify his people to beat Hillary Clinton.
Apparently, he may prefer a ‘Hillary win’ to advance his own personal agenda for 2020.
So earlier report of some delegates walked out after Cruz speech was greatly exaggerated?

Leaving before the afternoon session is over isn’t that unusal for the state convention.
The convention has already done all their work, made their delegate selections to the national
convention, and these speeches are nothing more than wrap ups by some named individuals.
Why they go beyond noon on Saturday doesn’t make sense.
Ping!

Not hardly “ these speeches are nothing more than wrap ups by some named individuals.”
JEFF SESSIONS is not just some ‘named individual.’ And I know that you recognize that ;-)
There was a time, (before Jeff endorsed Trump), that Cruz couldn’t utter a sentence without referencing Sessions name. In a conservative room in Texas, Sessions is a highly sought after valuable speaker, unless your a Cruzer.
These delegates were nearly all booked into Dallas through Saturday night. They obviously did not want to listen to party unity for Trump against the Clintons and the Democrat party. They were rude sore cruzermen delegates.
As I understand it, Ryan has yet to get thru a primary where his opponent was closing in on him following his stand vs Trump.
I would love to see Sen. Sessions as VP, I just wish he was younger. Unfortunately he will be 70 by inauguration day, and coupled with Trump’s age I think Trump should look at a younger VP option.
Plus I would sure hate to lose him as my Senator.
