But poverty-stricken seamstresses making some of the clothes in the MAS Holdings factory in Sri Lanka earn just £4.30 a day.
It would cost them more than a months wages to buy a pair of Beyonces £100 leggings.
The workers, mostly young women from poor rural villages, can only afford to live in boarding houses and work more than 60 hours a week to make ends meet.
Most are reluctant to speak out for fear of losing their jobs.
Campaigners insist the women are being exploited and treated like slaves.
" We have to share the shower block with the men so there isnt much privacy. It is shocking and many of the women are very scared. "

I thought I knew what “clobber” meant...
How can we find out more about this terrible situation?
Most [workers] are reluctant to speak out for fear of losing their jobs.
Oh.
Wait.
The workers WANT these jobs? They don't want to lose them? Because the alternatives are far worse?
Golly.
clobber = clothes, duds, threads, outfits
That’s the thing about Slanguage it is constantly changing the meanings of words and inventing new words. Read the King James Bible and the works of Shakespeare to get an idea of how much English has changed since those stabilizing works were written.
Campaigners insist the women are being exploited and treated like slaves.
” We have to share the shower block with the men so there isnt much privacy. It is shocking and many of the women are very scared. “
Good thing they don’t work at Target where it is nationally (and federally) celebrated policy to do so.
Liberals like Beyoncee should be pushing for a $15/hour minimum wage in Sri Lanka.
“I thought I knew what clobber meant...”
Looks like I have a new word in my vocabulary. Just as the wife finally convinced me to stop saying “far out”.
Hopefully they would have better taste, anyway. Whether they are Tamil or Sinhalese, they have pretty clothes in their own culture.
It would be hilarious for her to find out even she couldn't afford her own shtuff.
The "Social Justice Warriors" are all against "sweatshops". But the locals are all in favor.
Working for a company means you have a reliable source of income to buy food with. Working as a subsistence farmer out in the country means you will starve TO DEATH if your crops fail.
Yeah, they probably are terrified of losing that job and want to keep it. A starving man wanting a crust will desperately hold onto that crust. It doesn’t mean that is what they want.
The internationalists create a race to the bottom and lock in poverty. If Sri Lankan women began demanding even slightly better pay or conditions, the manufacturer simply has to move the factory to Mexico, Indonesia, Bangladesh, etc. The slavery conditions are structurally locked in.
Jerk the crust away and give it to someone who doesn’t even have a crust. When they want slightly better treatment, jerk it away again and find another wretch. Repeat as needed.
This is the “free trade” game.
LOL! Me neither.
The Fashion industry is the modern day slave trade.
Just tell them that the men are transitioning to a new gender, and they will have no cause to complain.
“Working for a company means you have a reliable source of income to buy food with. Working as a subsistence farmer out in the country means you will starve TO DEATH if your crops fail.”
Avoiding starvation is great management tool. It means people readily accept any abuse you heap upon them. When faced with death by starvation, you can usually even get women to defile themselves sexually for you! I cannot see how anyone could criticize a company for finding all the weaknesses and fears of a backwards society and using them to their advantage. That’s just smart business. /
How do you propose to fix that?
One world government with standard laws for all societies?
I reject Free Trade because we never get free trade. I support countries making their own laws and seeking their own advantage. My issue with the USA is that we keep making “free trade” agreements which screw the American worker 100% of the time.
MAS is a major supplier of bras to Victoria’s Secret and The Soma Intimates chain owned by the specialty retailer Chicos. Hanesbrands is also supplied by MAS.
So, as we all should know, it ain’t just moochies bff “bey” that’s taking advantage of these folks. Of course, what’s the alternative? Some income is better than no income. That’s what PO’s me about the social just-us assclowns/snowflakes here in the U.S. Ungrateful snots should be kissing the ground every morning for not being born in some 3rd world s**t hole. But no, they are offended if you tell them they look nice today. Grrrrrrrrr!
“How do you propose to fix that?
One world government with standard laws for all societies?”
The way we traditionally did. No supernational trade authorities and free trade groupswith dozens of nations.
Just one simple rule. If you want to run a sweatshop, fine. But you cant sell in America.
you want access to the American market, you have to follow our rules. (such as no slavery)
