In Putin, IOC aristocrats such as Bach thought they had found their kindred spirit, willing to pay and do anything for Olympic glory.
Construct lavish and ridiculous facilities that play to the IOC's over-inflated sense of worth? Check. Suck up to IOC leadership like they are all-powerful? Check. Toss a little something extra on the side to assure the voting on host city goes smooth? Cough. Cough.
The New York Times on Thursday reported the latest, and most damning, proof yet that Russia did more than just host the 2014 Winter Olympics: they conspired to fix it. Grigory Rodchenkov, the director of Russia's anti-doping laboratory at the time, detailed to the newspaper how a state-run program was able to use being the host nation to swap out dirty urine samples with clean ones to assure the eligibility of dozens of Russian athletes.
There couldn't be a more apt postscript to the Sochi Games than this: The whole thing was a fake.
The IOC, thinking it had found their latest desperate despot with billions to burn on them while cooing in their ear, was actually being played for fools, as Russia used the home-country advantage to attempt to rig the entire event.

The Olympics are a joke. Have been for a long time and probably for most of their existence. If American networks, NBC in particular just refused to televise them, the Olympics would die a quick death. Another corrupt international entity propped up by American advertising dollars and viewership.
Not as fake as the upcoming Brazilian zika fest will be!
I really want to hate Putin, but then he does something that just tickles the daylight out of me. Maybe he’s trying to create the lovable rouge persona. I’ll probably be chuckling for days after seeing the IOC get it up the ***.
No wonder he was so ticked at the Russian hockey team, he had paid a little of $ for gold and they still didn’t win it.
And they still couldn't get the Olympic rings to work.
The Olympics is getting killed by their own greed, mostly due to China and Russia. They were so willing to spend extravagant amounts of money that cities now are beginning to balk at the price. I will always be proud of Denver, who in the 1970s won an Olympic bid, but then the voters rejected the bonds to pay for it. Look like they were ahead of their time.
Hopefully it won't be the final nail in the human race.

It really makes me sad, knowing some Olympians and the lifetimes they have worked to get where they are today. I love so many good things about the Olympics but bad people try to ruin the good.

It’s bull-pucky, of course, but very telling.
For all the faults, the Olympics are loved world-wide. Just because America may ignore, not broadcast or boycott the Olympics would not spell death. Not at all. You may as well say that the Soccer World Cup would die if the USA wasn’t interested. It’s a myopic and stupid view of the world.

I guess at least you have curling in the winter Olympics, which is enjoyable to watch and I like some of the skiing events.
but mostly, its drawn out, fixed, manipulated events that you mostly can't even watch live....
not anymore....if our people and leaders could get away with doping, they would...they probably do...
like in the NFL, I suspect they're all mostly doping...
but we're sheeple.....we're lead around by our noses...
