Trump: Muslim Ban 'Just A Suggestion'
CNN ^ | 05/12/2016 | David Wright

Posted on 05/12/2016 12:55:23 PM PDT by Cyberman

Donald Trump, who issued a December press release "calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States," said Wednesday such a ban "hasn't been called for yet" and it was "only a suggestion."

It's the latest lightning-speed evolution for the real estate tycoon as he pivots from the provocateur who upended the Republican primary to a general election candidate....

Trump has not wavered. He has always suggested a ban “until we can figure out what is going on”.

To the Croozers and the #Hillary! crowd this is a moment in which they want to say “GOTCHA! SEE WE TOLD YOU SO!” “CRUZ WAS THE ONLY GOOD ONE!”

It’s nonsense.

It was the leftist media that kept saying “Trump wants a total ban on all muslims forever and ever, with out exception” in an effort to cause voters to shy away from him.

You Croozers just don’t quit do you?

Struck a nerve...? Too bad...

I guess you aren’t used to people calling you out...for being obnoxious...

As for civil discourse, you started...by name calling...first...

I didn’t...

As for insulting the poster by calling her confused...well she was...

She claimed congress refused to work with Obama, it’s the other way around...

That’s hardly a insult to correct an obvious error...

have a beautiful night...

Struck a nerve...? Too bad...

What you said? lol. Milktoast.

You insulted the poster and I called you on it. Now you're crying up a storm. I called you on your false assertion about his "position" and you go away whimpering. Sounds like a guy who found a thread to exploit with false assertions made at the outset, you were called out on it, and now you go off into the sunset.

3,000 of our brothers and sisters already died in NY, many jumping from skyscrapers to avoid being burned alive.

I know there were some changes - I was acquainted with people who found themselves on no-fly lists, because their names were similar to some known to be dangerous. But I don’t think it went far enough.

As Mr. Robinson has said, it would be a ‘Herculean’ undertaking; but we have to take some measures. Trump is the only one who has really pressed the point.

No, Donald Trump has not softened his stance on banning Muslims

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/no-donald-trump-has-not-softened-his-stance-on-banning-muslims/2016/05/12/6ec8d514-185c-11e6-aa55-670cabef46e0_story.html?postshare=9281463095229918&tid=ss_tw

As headlines popped up this week declaring that Donald Trump had softened his position on banning most foreign Muslims from entering the United States, some Republicans celebrated the news.

“Glad h e’s walking it back,” Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) tweeted on Thursday.

Except that Trump has not actually walked anything back. The presumptive Republican nominee still wants to ban nearly all members of the world’s fastest-growing religion from entering the United States in an effort to prevent terrorist attacks.

For some strange reason his most ardent supporters think he can bypass Congress, current laws, court decisions to keep his promises...

Liar. Not only a jackass but now a liar. Listen, when you ascribe false motives and intentions to people; when you suggest his "most ardent supporters" are zombies who don't know the limitation of powers; when you impute characteristics to Trump where there is no extant evidence - then you deserve all the negative accolades that can be mustered.

I’m sure he will try, but it’s a huge task to make good on promises he made off the top of his head...

So Trump will try to bypass Congress, current laws, court decisions? You are a liar. A man who has never been a lying politician like Cruz and yet you are so insightful you are prepared to assert he will bypass these for what? Self-aggrandizement? Fess up. You've been hurt. Your man couldn't cut it. Let it go and stop trying to impugn with so little knowledge you have except bitterness.

I thought I read something when Trump first made his statement to the effect of: immigration on ANY group can be halted if there was a perceived threat to the country from this group.

I hope I wasn’t dreaming this, because it would certainly make banning muslims perfectly legal.

Having said that, it would be impossible to find out who was a muslim and who wasn’t. STOP ALL IMMIGRATION for awhile. See my post #15 for details.

There's no need to frame anything in any particular way.

The fact is, under current US federal law, the President may exclude any individual or group from entering this country, for any reason.

Failure to realize that simply betrays an ignorance of current law. The President can exclude men, women, catholics, people wearing red shirts, people who go to prayer meeting on Wednesday nights, Japanese citizens, Indonesian citizens, gays, straight people, people under 6 feet tall, people over 6 feet tall, etc.

My understanding is that, statutorily, the President has arbitrary power to exclude foreigners from immigrating to this country, based on any criteria whatsoever. Religious tests for immigration are explicitly mentioned as an example somewhere in the US Code, if I'm not mistaken.

"Softening" his rhetoric on this issue is certainly nothing for any hysterical critic of Donald Trump to hang his/her hat on. Donald Trump has made his intent clear, and his reasons for advocating the policy have been stated.

Vote Trump

Holding Trump to account after he is elected is one thing. Working against him and in so doing advancing Hillary’s campaign is another.

Well said.

Yes - that’s what I had heard and read. Thank you.

I still think he needs to NOT single out muslims, as there’s no way of knowing.

He needs to halt ALL immigration for awhile. Just do it.

when you suggest his "most ardent supporters" are zombies who don't know the limitation of powers;

Not all, but a few, who do not understand how separation of powers work...

Their own words prove them guilty as charged...

Just a few:
Trump will build the wall even with his personal wealth...Really ?
Trump should fire Angela Merkel German Chancellor...How do you do that?
Trump should fire Paul Ryan...(I wish he could)
Trump should have the DOJ arrest Obama the day he takes office
Etc...

when you impute characteristics to Trump where there is no extant evidence -

Where exactly did I do that?...you know like "Trump is a _______"

Then you deserve all the negative accolades that can be mustered.

Glad you took up my cause : )

Hope that makes you feel better and sleep soundly knowing you tried to put me in my place..

Honestly, I've been around here for more than 17 years...your "corrections" fall on deaf ears...

See, I am a principled constitutionalist conservative, I vote my principles, I support people who have my principles...

I hope Trump is the greatest thing to happen to this country since Reagan, I see very little evidence with his current campaign that will happen...

Trump is not a constitutionalist, he is a pragmatic conservative, which is why I will vote for him...

I suppose, but why let anyone in? Does your country need more immigration at the moment? You’re not obliged to take anyone in.

Take a breather. It would be a real money saver - not having to screen, decide who can come in, who can’t. It’s just easier, for whatever length of time you need or want.

If Congress act like it does with Obama, yeah, Trump can by pass Congress.

The poster I was responding to said, Trump should bypass Congress...,

This is what the poster said above. You said the next. In other words an obstructionist Congress who were more intent on moving a GOPE position forward than one which put America first. That's all the poster was referencing. Nothing nefarious. This President may butt heads with Congress given potentially the different agendas.

And thirdly, I certainly don't hate the man, but refuse to join the FR cult like adoration he has here...

What a pissant thing to say. Another insult I'm calling you on and it was before you were ever called a jackass too. Unless you were disembodied at the time or still wet-dreaming of a Cruz dominion that was you who just insulted JR and the rest of the supporters of DT on here.

Not all, but a few, who do not understand how separation of powers work...

Their own words prove them guilty as charged... Just a few: Trump will build the wall even with his personal wealth...Really ? Trump should fire Angela Merkel German Chancellor...How do you do that? Trump should fire Paul Ryan...(I wish he could) Trump should have the DOJ arrest Obama the day he takes office Etc...

You never heard of hyperbole or rhetorical comments? lol. Get a sense of humour. You take yourself too seriously. Here I'll use some hyperbole about Cruz: First order of business if Cruz were President - Pass EO #1 proclaiming he was the Dominion King. and his dad co-regent. EO #2 - All his followers get to wear pure white robs befitting their acolyte status. What do you think?

Honestly, I've been around here for more than 17 years

Yeah myself 16 years but whose counting...

I would agree with you, but I am personally acquainted with a number of immigrants who have been nothing but advantageous additions to this Nation - including some who sought political asylum from repressive situations.

I want my country to remain the ‘Shining City Upon a Hill’, for those worthy of it.

I don’t think it’s an all-or-nothing situation. It will take brains and dedication, but we CAN protect ourselves without denying worthy individuals the opportunity to come to Freedom.

A smart person knows the difference between what you “can” do or say, versus what’s the “wise” thing to do or say.
That trait is called discernment.

Yes, our president on our nation’s behalf, “can” ban anyone he deems detrimental to the nation from immigrating here.

However, you know, as well as I, the optics of banning people based on their religion is politically RADIOACTIVE.
Can you imagine how loudly and compelling the argument would be made that it’s the height of hypocrisy for a nation founded on “freedom of religion” to deny “refugees” that same opportunity?

There’s a alot of emotional passion that Mr. Trump inspires.
Rest assured the left is even more expert in emotional rhetoric, and the only way the Trump campaign and real conservatives are going to win the election and critical objectives, is to not fall into a trap of their own making.

Banning immigration from high risk nations is a smarter and more legitimate way of achieving the goal of reducing further islamic threats landing on our shore, rather than targeting a specific religion.
Discrimination based on religion would Never have legal standing these days (except Christians /s)

A Syrian Muslim can deny their religion and successfully immigrate in the case of a ban on Muslim immigration.

However, Syrians (and its jihadist muslims) would be denied entry to our country if there were a ban on immigration from that nation.
We’ve got to be smarter, more determined and communicate better than insane destructive liberals if we want to win and save this country.

Under U.S. Code, the president does have the statutory authority to keep anyone out of the country, for any reason he thinks best. Per 8 USC §1182:

“Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.”

Yes, the president has the authority to do exactly what Trump is describing. And by the way, this kind of thing has happened before.

In the late 1800s, Congress passed legislation broadly aimed at halting the immigration of Chinese laborers. Those were not fully repealed until 1943. Quotas limiting immigration based on race and national origin were also enacted in the early 1900s. Racial quotas were repealed in 1952, and those limiting people based on national origin were eliminated in 1965.
