Japan's ambassador to the United States weighed in on the U.S. presidential election debate on Friday by arguing against the "America first" stance of Republican candidate Donald Trump and stressing the importance of the U.S.-Japan alliance.
Without mentioning Trump by name, the envoy, Kenichiro Sasae, told a Washington forum Japan had come up unexpectedly in the election debate, showing that nothing could be taken for granted in terms of the long-standing alliance.
"In the presidential elections, there are arguments whether the United States is going for the isolationist stance," Sasae said. "I don't want to see that kind of United States.
"I want to see the United States to be strong and come with a strong robust position, not really thinking of the United States only," he said.
Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for the Nov. 8 presidential election, has portrayed Japan, a long-time treaty ally of the United States, as a free-rider on security. He has suggested Tokyo might need nuclear weapons to ease U.S. financial commitment to its defense, anathema to the only country ever attacked by atomic bombs.
Japan's Minister for Regional Revitalization, Shigeru Ishiba, said comments by one candidate, who he said he would not name, were causing "a lot of concern in Japan."

Taleb is a great, great man. He knows things.
Japan, the country than bans US imports while demanding free access to American for their imports.
Don:”I love the spirit of the Japanese, but their leaders are much more cunning than ours”
Screw the Nihlist naysayers in their academic ivory towers of doom and despair. We know the paths they have played out for us. Damn them all. Up with the Constitution and the Founders Path! Let us put our interests first from this point forward. I know Trump is by no means a perfect candidate nor does he possess a perfect record. But as a galvanizing force, a catalyst if you will he is serving his country beyond measure. Let us not waste this incredible chance. Act! And with all due speed! Put America's interests first and act accordingly is all of our dealings!
If you want to believe in a Japan first, live there as I did for a summer.
Hall should be hale. Darn smart phone.
Tell us about it
Trump for President.
Reuters is British-owned scum.
First off Trump will not get rid of a Japan-US alliance and second, why is all the hate coming from other nations about us wanting to look out for ourselves for once instead of the whole world for the last I checked the Japanese look out for themselves and so do the Chinese and the Russians and the Poles too, why can’t we do it?
Well, they own a lot of our national debt. Perhaps, if they agree to renegotiate the interest rates and other details of those loans, then maybe Pres. Trump will not need to use tariffs against them. He was just recently talking about renegotiating our debt with foreign lenders. I don’t think Trump wants the same solutions for each country necessarily; he just thinks they need to give back to us somehow in turn.
Agreed it is time we looked out for our own damn selves just for a bit and the hell with what some globalist cuck has to say about it.
What have I ever wrote on this forum in 18 years that leads you to believe I believe in Japan first?
Hmm...I think he means he encountered a “Japan First” attitude among Japanese when he summered there.
At least there’s no Muslim problem in the Land of the Rising Sun.
As for Nipponese criticism of Trump, I file it under “From those wonderful folks who brought you Pearl Harbor”.
I was writing a narrative to the headline and not directing it to you personally.
I visited Hiroshima. I was walking across the Ai bridge, which I think was the aiming point for the atom bomb. Some older guy walked past me and spit right behind me and looked me in the eye. Okay, well maybe he had a problem. It was just a general feeling one gets when people give you a stare when walking. I was never accosted in any way except for some peaceniks with a clipboard wanting donations for peace or something. Tokyo is a great city and I did feel very safe there, but there’s this atmosphere of underlying something... lots of expats from the US and UK. The best DJ on one of the rock stations speaks perfect idiomatic Japanese and he’d launch into a ramble flipping back and forth from English to Japanese and back again. TV shows are a hoot.
I expect that there will be a LOT of countries tee totally pissed off when their welfare checks get cut off. They’ve been taking us for a ride for a very long time.
And that ‘look’ along with the spitting...I’ve seen that before right here in the good ole US of A, by south of the border folks. One in particular makes sure that the lewy hit’s the neighbor’s tomato plants.
The Japs don’t like Trump’s “America First” position? Really? Can’t SAY what I think, but there are still a lot of us left who were children when those (bleeps) bombed Pearl Harbor, and many of our fathers fought them for years or died fighting them. Japan can shut up. They lost.
Nailed it.
Things are “Japan First” throughout Japan. Now if we somehow cornered the market on Hello Kitty men’s underwear, or Powerpuff Girls lunchboxes for executives then they would change their tune.
Hear hear - well said! And...I like your screen name.
