Sadiq Khan becomes London's first elected Muslim mayor

LONDON — Labour candidate Sadiq Khan has been elected Mayor of London, beating his Conservative opponent Zac Goldsmith.

Khan, 45, replaces flamboyant Conservative Boris Johnson after a race characterised by allegations of extremism and racism.

Goldsmith called Khan — who is Muslim — a "radical" and accused him of giving "platforms, oxygen and even cover" to Islamic extremists.

His allegations were echoed by prime minister David Cameron in the parliament, during Wednesdays' question time.

The son of a bus driver from Pakistan, Khan is a former human rights lawyer who branded himself "the British Muslim who takes the fight to the extremists."

Before the elections, he promised to be "a mayor for all Londoners," urging voters to "choose hope over fear."

A difficult campaign

Tony Travers, a local government expert at the London School of Economics, said the introduction of a directly elected London mayor 16 years ago had introduced "an American form of government" that differs from traditional British parliamentary and local government structures.

"Now intriguingly this time — and we've seen a bit of it before — it appears to have brought with it some of the harder American campaign tactics," he said ahead of the result.

A victory for Khan is a bright spot in what looks set to be a grim day for Labour, which has been out of office nationally since 2010.

Opposition parties usually gain seats in midterm elections as voters punish the sitting government. But Labour under left-wing leader Jeremy Corbyn is divided and beset by a controversy over allegations of anti-Semitism within its ranks. The claims gained new momentum when former London Mayor Ken Livingstone — a Corbyn ally — claimed that Adolf Hitler had supported Zionism before he came to power.

Livingstone, Labour lawmaker Naz Shah and several local party officials have been suspended over comments or social media posts about Israel, and Corbyn has faced renewed pressure over his links to pro-Palestinian groups.

About 2,700 local council seats are up for grabs, and Corbyn predicted last week that Labour wouldn't lose ground — but later said that "predictions are not that important."

A poor showing would bolster discontented Labour lawmakers who believe the party is heading for a third straight general election defeat in 2020 if Corbyn — a life-long socialist with strong support among the party's grass roots — is not replaced.

40 percent of those living in London are foreign born.

Britain has surrendered it’s nation to quiet invaders. The outcome will be a disaster for the UK.

The tourists will indeed stop coming.

We don’t need lectures thanks.

Maybe you should listen to this lecture...

“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.”

A quote from an 1899 book by Winston Churchill, "The River War", in which he describes Muslims he apparently observed during Kitchener's campaign in the Sudan

While I agree that London should not be off-limits to any tourist because I always found it a safe and fascinating city, you cannot compare London to Dearborn, Michigan. One is a great, international city and the other is a dreary backwater. That is how muzzies were shoveled into it - they are not being put on Martha’s Vineyard!

Also, if Obama is a muzzie (and the evidence is out on that), he’s not a very good one. He’s a black radical more than he’s a religious fanatic. I don’t think he even believes in God - people of his class and background generally are athiests. It’s the cool thing, you know.

I just read an article on how poor tourism is in Paris because of the last two terrorist attacks. It would be a perfect time for people to travel there and experience the glories of that city. Probably security is high and they’re slashing prices at the 3 Michelin-starred restaurants and hotels. To dine in such an establishment is a memorable experience.

Now is the time to travel, people!

“I am more worried that he is Labour than Muslim.”

Amazing. Not many suicide bombers among Labourites. What’s for June 23rd? Mr. Sad IQ gets sworn into office on the Koran by Anjem Choudary?

Labour is currently infected with Jew haters. Even The Guardian recognizes the problem...a little. Which is sad ‘cause so many of my Anglo-Jewish friends vote - you guessed it!

If the R.A.F. had Scotsman in their ranks in 1940, the Luftwaffe would have been finished off in a week.

The USA needs to make it clear to nuclear equipped European countries that the USA will never tolerate a Muslim state take over and then controlling those arsenals. We will intervene.

We’d best clear America of all Muslims. Tear down the mosques and ‘community centers.’

There is no such thing as a ‘peace-loving moderate Muslim’.

The terrorist will cut out heads off while the ‘moderate’ holds our feet.

The policy should be zero tolerance toward militant Muslims. The FBI should infiltrate every mosque in the USA.

Thanks for your perspective...I did some research since I asked, and he does appear to support shariah law...which I see as extremely bad.

I don’t seem it as the start of conquest, but a continuation.

Sadiq Khan has a track record. As a junior minister in the last Labour government he was a rather low-key, mainstream centre-left politician who did little to frighten the horses. As Mayor I wouldn’t expect him to be remotely as troublesome as his predecessor-but-one, ‘Red Ken’ Livingstone. His main policy priority seems to be housing, and if I were a Londoner I wouldn’t quibble with that.

Indeed! Western society doesn’t seem to learn from history — even our most recent history.

Is it fair to say New York has become more ethnic overall yet gentrified at the same time with more and more youth seeking domicile?

I’ve not been to New York City in 20 years

I was in Chicago a few months ago and impressed with how livable the normal areas were

And how American feeling compared to say Miami or San Antonio

Manhattan always seems very middle to upper-middle class to me - with plenty of African-Americans and Puerto Ricans who are like apple pie and the flag to me. It saddened me that last weekend going to a party in Jamaica where I was raised to see how Columbian/Arabic the area had become. All the old Irish and German of that neighborhood either dead or moved away. Unbearable to remember how wonderful it all was when I was a child and how shabby and dirty it looked last Sunday.

Manhattan was like that in my time there

Black above west 125 and above the park and Puerto Rican and black with a few Italians hanging on above east 96

Lower east side was dicey including Tompkins

Sammy Romanian was like an adventure trip....too much east of there was injun country....some said worst area of all of New York especially around those projects by the Williamsburg bridge

Inwood was Dominicans and Orthodox Jews

There were a few spots in Harlem where brave pioneers were buying formerly grand townhouse mansions and renovating but it was a subway ride to a decent D’agostinos

Even Hells Kitchen still had bad parts.....Jimmy Coonan still ruled then

10th ave was 100s of prostitutes on the corners at night....I’ve never seen that anywhere that open except Barcelona

And no of course not...I have some standards

I don’t know. I used to live on 14th and Avenue C in the 70s. It was a food desert, no doubt, but it didn’t bother me in particular. I never hang out in parks so Tompkins was basically a no-go. I did go to Sammy’s Romanian which is still there and still serving those silver dollar coin potatoes. I used to go to restaurants in Harlem and then up further to Madam Jumels and my art classes were taken at the Cloisters. You just have to know how to maneuver here and not get hysterical if a black guy sits next to you on the subway. I’m not directing this at you, of course, just at folks who get spooked too easily or watch to many reruns of The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3.
