What evidence do we have of the Carthaginian Solution?

Basically the Maya area of Yucatan going into central america
was farmed over and dotted with cities from about 100 AD 800 AD. Similar farming filled in much of today’s Southern Brazil jungles. And north america was much more densely populated before the first europeans arrived.

I was in Tikal on the Yucatan southern coast in December. It was a religious/astronomical/trading site. The temple area was about 20 acres around and bounded by a high thick wall. Entry to the fortress was through a very narrow passageway. People could only get in stooped over and single file. Inside the fortress at Tikal they built buildings with square holes in them and lined them up pointing eastward in such a way that —twice a year — the sun would shine through both holes. That would tell the farmers that surrounded the area when to plant. The people on the inside depended on the farmers for their food. The Mayan were sun worshipers. Their god’s name was Kinich Ahau. The temple priesthood personified the sun. So whenever there was any kind of serious trouble they would practice human sacrifice to appease their god. Among the Mayan nobility/priesthood—the nobility would offer themselves willingly for sacrifice as it was considered a great honor to be sacrificed. They would cut out the heart of the sacrificial victim and offer it to the sun.

In a few short decades around 800 AD the weather changed.

This was the beginning of what known as the medieval warm. The weather became warm enough for grapes to be grown in northern Europe and England. the vikings began their expansion out of Scandinavian. They found Greenland to be warm and green enough to plant crops there.

In central america the rains stopped.

crop yields became smaller and smaller year after year, decade after decade. This went on for centuries. The land simply could not support the dense populations that had been established.

The mayan priesthood/royalty response was to sacrifice themselves. But no matter how much they sacrificed themselves — they could not bring back the rains. Still they continued the sacrifices.

In about 880 AD the Toltecs from modern central mexico invaded the now weakened Yucatan. They introduced a new form of sacrifice. They would war for the sake of taking warriors and high rank nobility to their gods for sacrifice. ( The later Aztecs got this practice from the Toltecs as well.)

The combination of drought/hunger self sacrifice and war for sacrifice completely gutted the Mayan cities of their priesthood nobility. Their cities were abandoned.

By the time the Spanish arrived in the early 1500’s, the medieval warm had ended. The little ice age had begun. The vikings had been driven out of Greenland by the cold . The rains had returned to the central america. The jungles grew over the old cities.

There is a book available called the “Conquest of New Spain” by Bernal Diaz. He was Cortes’s oldest lieutenant. You can read it for free online. just google it. Diaz describes Mayan practices, central american and Caribbean practices that included not just human sacrifice but also homosexuality in the priesthood. The twin practices just completely grossed out the Spanish. Their reaction was pretty much like that of Joshua and Moses when they returned to the promised land.

However, the big killers in the new world were diseases brought over by the Europeans. There were two big die offs in Mexico about 1530 and 1570. Brazil was densely populated and millions died there. Hernando de soto’s expedition caused
the death by disease of huge chunks of the north american Indian population from the Mississippi to Florida.

On human sacrifice—I agree with an earlier poster that all people’s everywhere at time practiced human sacrifice. It was the chief accomplishment of of the Judeo Christianity to abolish the practice. That is, Abraham almost did to Issac what was the common practice of the middle east at the time. God told him not to however—not to sacrifice Issac —but rather sacrifice a sheep. Jesus by being God himself finally ended the practice of human sacrifice because Jesus—being also God—is a sufficient sacrifice to restore a right relationship to God—to those who believe in Jesus.

I was turned to Christianity by Bernal Diaz book 20 years ago because the nasty practices of the new world and the old world were similar yet these people had no contact with each other. That means that that kind bad behavior grows out of the biology of humans. Its as if humans have a defective gene. Christianity calls it a sin nature that comes from the first rebellion of Adam and Eve. Jesus corrects the problem.

Sometimes the problem in nature is not too little rain—but rather too much rain. The Moche culture in Peru died out in the 500’s because a super el nino drowned them 30 years of rain. Archaeologists have found temple mounts dating from the 500’s with hundreds of high status sacrificed individuals. They didn’t have their hearts cut out. Rather the Moche practice was to bash their heads in. They thought if they could just sacrifice enough of their best people the rains would stop.

If the Mayan and Moche response to the weather seems appallingly stupid. Consider that Roe V Wade came out about the same time as the Club of Rome’s Limits of Growth and Paul Ehrlich’s population bomb—which in turn correspond to the sudden elevation of homosexuals in the culture.

Fascinating, thanks. Dr. Edwin Barnhart in the “Maya to Aztec” lecture series devotes a lecture to discussing the astronomical orientations of many of the buildings of the Maya cities. One interesting discovery is that buildings in some cities are oriented not toward their local solstice or zenith point, but toward that of a more prestigious city in another location.

I guess that puts them a cut above the Carthaginians who sacrificed the children of low status parents.

Similar to the Spanish, the Romans were disgusted with the child sacrifice and perversions of the Carthaginians, which was one of the reasons that the destruction of Carthage took the extreme form that it did.
