Secretary of State John Kerry just gave Syria a hard deadline for starting the political transition to get rid of Syrian President Bashar Assad: Aug. 1.
Kerry told reporters Tuesday if Syria doesn’t begin the process of removing Assad by Aug. 1, there will be serious consequences, The Associated Press reports.
“If Assad does not adhere to this, there will clearly be repercussions,” Kerry said. “One of them may be the total destruction of the cease-fire and then go back to war. I don’t think Russia wants that. I don’t think Assad is going to benefit from that. There may be even other repercussions being discussed. That is for the future.”

The question after that is “and replace him and his clan with what?” This is a Sunni - Shiite fight of long standing and a proxy war between Russia and Iran on one aide and Turkey and Saudi Arabia on the other. However we might dislike the Assad regime and its allies they are the ones who kept the minority Christian communities safe and been a rational albeit nasty opponent for Israel to deal with. Where is our vital national interest in taking them out and creating one more power vacuum in the region?

If there is that much lead time then there is no reason not to ask Congress for a declaration of war. On Syria.

Why not just extend the deadline to November? Or January? This wouldn't be any more than yet another 0bama administration dog turd the new guy is going to have to pick up from the lawn anyway. Why pretend?

Elections weren’t ‘postponed’ during the Civil War when a hostile Army was almost within a cannon shot of DC, so no foreign war is going to be such a cause.
