n a post-apartheid context, is a democratic Afrikaner identity possible? Are there other traditions apart from apartheid that can be drawn on in Afrikaner culture that can advance democracy and social justice?
These questions are particularly relevant in South Africa, given that in recent years there has been a heightened contestation over Afrikaner identify, driven by a hardening of whiteness.
When the National Party came to power in 1948 politician JG Strijdom, the apartheid prime minister between 1954 and 1958 who was nicknamed the Lion of the North, demanded eendersdenkendheid. The Afrikaansword means a condition of thinking the same. It is a collective term as it necessarily requires more than one person to abide by it.
The directive of eendersdenkendheid was founded in apartheid. Opposition to apartheid was as treasonous as refusing to defend your country during a war, hardliner Strijdom told his white, assumed-to-be male audience.
This demand for conformism to a particular ethnic configuration of heteropatriarchal white supremacism also known as apartheid permeated Afrikaner nationalism. State power amplified the authoritarian tendency of conformism in Afrikanerdom. Anyone who did not bend the knee was a volksverraaier, or traitor to the volk(Afrikaner people).

The simple answer is that you don’t. Get out while they are letting you out.
What about those who have no where to go or no way to afford such a move. I was recently made aware the situation is very real for many.
I agree. I would get the heck out.
They don’t. Afrikaners should come to America. We need them desperately.
Some would say this is Obama’s model for the USA.
They’re not gonna let a bunch of White people into the US.
They wouldn’t have the slightest chance of moving to America.
What many don’t realize is that the Afrikaners settled much of South Africa’s Veld (farmland) when it was completely empty of inhabitants. They were the first. NOt a Xhosa or Zulu to be seen. They arrived after the white man had made the area productive. Sound familiar?
I know how bad it is for some there, but there may be nothing that we can do for them by pray that they find Christ.
That was my understanding also. It is their land. It was uninhabited (except for a few wandering bushmen). The Boers developed the land, and then all the illegal immigrants from the Lake Victoria region swarmed in.
Of course, since it is Africa, melanin challenged people need not apply.
You beat me to it. There is no place for them there, the government (as much as it is) is even more evil than the most repressive apartheid government because it is sanctioning the elimination of those people.
All any of us can do is pray for them, because it is what the administration in this country wants as well.
God help them.
20 years ago the Houston apartment complex I lived in was full of South African expats, and more were arriving all the time.
Nothing seems to have changed.
It is!

Sounds like a contemporary American university.
Afrikaners are true Africans, just white. They created the most productive nation on the African Continent. Unfortunately, SA is now rapidly going the way of Zimbabwe.
Damn, you spoiled my fun! Afrikaners are white Christians and of course the Barky Bammie regime won’t let them in just like they won’t let in Middle Eastern Christians while opening the floodgates for millions of Muslims!
I’m 68 years old & just realized I won’t die in bed in some nursing home. I’ll be dying on my feet with weapon in hand as the Obama enabled s***storm comes to conquer America.
Better get off my @zz, get in shape, & hit the range.
“They wouldnt have the slightest chance of moving to America.”
If they did would they be African Americans?
Jewish South Africans have been moving to the ATL area since the late ‘70s. I became aware that there was a pretty good sized community of them here c. 1980.
Funny you say that. I know a white SA emigre who claims he got a full ride at Tulane his senior year by applying for an AA scholarship his junior year. He got his citizenship during his junior year. As he tells it, the black clerk in the financial aid office was not amused when he requested an AA scholarship form.
