A 3-day-old baby was fatally mauled by a pet dog in front of the child's parents at their Mira Mesa home Thursday night, San Diego police said Friday.
The parents were in bed, watching TV, with their newborn son and pit bull-mix dog when the mother coughed, startling the dog, child abuse unit Sgt. Tu Nguyen said.
The dog reacted by biting the baby, he said. The parents pulled the animal off and raced the child to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

Molosser “Pit-Bull-TYPE” dogs kill one American approximately every fourteen days. The last one was March 31. I’ve been holding my breath for a week. Been researching the situation for several months now. The statistics are horrifying. You can see them here: www.dogsbite.org , here: http://www.nationalpitbullvictimawareness.org/npbva-campaign/press-release/ , and here: http://pitbulldeaths.info/index.php
Boiled down, you are correct. The pit bull type comprises around 6% of the dogs in the US, but commits between 66 and 80% of the fatal attacks of humans, and a bigger proportion of the pet and livestock deaths.
I have a neighbor that has a HUGE pit bull in the yard next door. The dog simply loves me and every time that I get next to the fence he comes over, stands up on the chain link fence and wants me to pet him....and I do. He loves it.
However, run the lawn mower by the fence and he becomes the most vicious animal you have ever seen. Even after you turn it off he is still trying to tear the fence up.
With that type of personality I would NEVER trust him with a child.
State Farm will sell you the insurance.
There is a website that covers this news called www.dogsbite.org , if you are interested.
And http://pitbulldeaths.info/index.php will have this death listed within a week. “Pitbull-TYPE” dogs kill, on the average, approximately one American every 14 days. The last one was on 31 March, although one guy from this week is clinging to life.
There is something very sick about people who are attracted to this breed. It’s absurd to use the “tabula rasa” argument on pure bred dogs whose temperaments have been selected out for breeding for dozens of generations. Blank slate? Then show me a pit. that can heard sheep or lead the blind! Throw those parents into jail!
We know a young couple who got married and bought a Pit Bull pup. They raised it right, and made a very big deal about how gentle and loving the dog was. Then when the wife got pregnant, they suddenly found that there would not be enough room in their three-bedroom house with a yard for both dog and baby, so Uncle took the dog.
I talked to the wife later. She said that they had painted themselves into a corner going on and on about how gentle the dog was, but were not willing to take the risk with the baby. I told her no one would fault her for doing the right thing.
They now have two kids and a Basset hound, in the same house. Plenty of room for the Basset!
The dog might well have been ignored and neglected with a newborn in the house, and taken the infant as a threat. Sensible parents go through a very careful process to help the dog adjust, just as they would with other children.
Great site, thanks.
Excellent comparison. Right down to the fact that I've know Muslims who seem to be very nice people in every sense of the word, but I still wouldn't give them the key to my house.
Agree, it’s instinctual. I have a black lab. They are natural birders and fishers. When I splash my hand in the pool, like a fish struggling in shallow water she nearly goes catatonic. Eyes bulging, mouth agape, grunting, growling, ready to pounce, etc. It’s pure instinct. I tell my kids the fish-like splashing triggers her instinctual fishing behavior. They think it’s funny but I warn them she can bite or jump on them, completely out of her mind, trying to get ‘the fish’.
I never knew that about Dobermans, having been terrified of the one which lived down the street from me when I was 5 or 6.
People with pit bulls deserve dead babies.
Probably so, and that’s why we got our current dog after we had our first-born. We read that puppies/dogs acclimatize easier to a baby/child that way. Worked for us.
“In before the pit bull apologists.”
Really. But they’re such SWEET dogs....(not)
Pit Bull Type dogs have been bred for dogfighting for hundreds of years by “dogmen”. The dogs are just doing what they have been bred for. The traits desired are: high prey drive, attack without warning, gripping, tearing, and killing, incredible strength, particularly in the jaw, the ability to ignore pain, and “gameness” - the willingness and desire to fight. Research the terms “break stick” and “turn on”. In addition, studies have been done on the temperament and personality traits of pit bull-type owners, too. Those can be found here, if you are interested. http://occupymaulstreet.blogspot.com/2012/12/darwin-dogs-pit-bulls-killing-and.html
Imagine if those stats were on humans.(Duck and Cover)
Todays society blasts right on past the proven logical documented behavior of pack animals coupled with their physical ability (these are the most ferocious fighting dogs in the world) in favor of their warm fuzziness and owners own ignorance.
Add a few snowflakes and you could have claims of doggie racism.
...many color variations.
It’s the breed. Sheep dogs herd sheep, Hunting dogs track prey, Pit bulls show random aggression. There is a reason many communities have a ban on owning pit bulls. Animal shelters are full of pit bulls nobody wants. They have been bred to be aggressive. Yes as previously posted, they are a ticking time bomb.
You can trust your coonhound. It’s usually a specific breed you need to worry about.
