Two lawmakers say the U.S. Secret Service may be running out of agents and could need to use outside help, according to the Washington Examiner.
"USSS simply cannot hire enough personnel to keep pace with historic attrition rates," House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz and ranking Democrat Elijah Cummings of Maryland said Tuesday in a letter to Secret Service Director Joseph Clancy.
The letter, which comes after a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) probe that questioned the agency's "ability to protect the White House and its occupants," called on the U.S. Secret Service to find ways to maintain the necessary level of staff. The probe was conducted after a man jumped over the fence and went into the White House in 2014.
"The committee encourages USSS to explore innovative ways to fill this staffing gap-such as detailing qualified law enforcement officials or [administrative, professional, and technical] employees from other agencies-in the short-term while continuing its long-term efforts to develop a zero-based budget and increase hiring and retention," the letter said.
"Nearly every USSS employee who spoke with the [inspector general] said they had serious concerns regarding UD staffing shortages," the lawmakers said.
"Some employees characterized the agency as 'hemorrhaging' employees."
The DHS was working to increase the number of special agents, but its efforts have been unsuccessful because so many people have left the department over the past two years, according to the Examiner.
"Although they may have only indirectly contributed to the events of that night, underlying and continuing resource and management issues are negatively affecting the Uniformed Division and, potentially, its ability to protect the White House and its occupants," the DHS inspector general said in a report released Tuesday.
"In particular, the Uniformed Division is severely understaffed, which has led to inadequate training, fatigue, low morale, and attrition."
No problem, we’ll just outsource to Mexican cartel members. Those guys are pretty badass.
“What in the world could be causing this strange phenomenon?”
The press has no honest idea.
How’D ya like to draw the short straw and have to guard MOOCHELLE?
Agree. No surprise at all, and you know that’s the reason.
You couldn’t be more correct, Brother.
With the current administration and even some in the past it’s not only a thankless job but a job despised by those you’re supposed to give your life for.
Yep, a real nightmare.
This is what it's all about.
Something is being set up - but what?
For some reason the administration wants outside security - people who owe their allegiance to Obama instead of the USA and the Constitution.
Who does Obama want providing his security?
The Muslim Brotherhood?
Hezbollah?
Maybe they can tap into the TSA personnel pool. :-)
obama fruit.
I have seen this phenomenon in the Washington bureaucracy numerous times in the past.
Step 1: Claim you cannot hire fast enough to replace people leaving.
Step 2: Commission a study to determine why.
Step 3: The study claims people are leaving government service to make more money.
Step 4: Conclude that the federal workforce under consideration is underpaid.
Step 5: Have some Congress Critter make a speech claiming the only way to save the XYZ department is to raise the salaries of everyone in the XYZ department by 30% to attract the best candidates.
Step 6: When nothing happens other than the taxpayers getting fleeced, return to Step 1.
After a detailed study on the WWW, and looking into the history of the Secret Service, it is my conclusion that
all of the attrition can be directly attributed to Bush 43
please elaborate
Good. The Secret Service should really be abolished; the Founding Fathers were man enough to pay for their own security if they needed to, and the same should hold for the rest of our national leaders.
Nothing that a long weekend with some hookers in Cartagena wouldn't cure.
Bring in the muzzies!
Maybe if they hired only nation-of-islam people they would have more applicants.
They’d have plenty if they removed SS protection from all but the current and immediately former president. After that they can bloody well pay for their own if they feel they need the security.
Poor guys are becoming seriously ill by the unimaginable stench they have to work in.
