This Saturday was the district conventions for many of the NC districts. The keynote speaker was Dr. Ada Fisher, a very impressive speaker and I recommend her short book I am a Republican which gives the history of NC African American Republicans. She also said it was her opinion that candidates for President should be born in America.
I wasnt sure how the process worked, but submitted myself as a delegate candidate. I wasnt sure if anyone would second my nomination. All the GOP delegates in my county were Cruz supporters.
Someone outside my district seconded me. Each of us gave a short speech as to why we should be a delegate and who we supported.
Here are my tallies. I think he said we had 118 district delegates. Of those, 24 were submitted as district delegates to represent NC districts at the GOP convention.
6 would be chosen from the 24 to represent the district.
We were each given two minutes to speak and we were to state who we supported. I counted 8 Trump supporters from the group. 3 Kasich, 2 Rubios. The rest Cruz supporters.
The 118 delegates present could vote for 6 out of the 24.
When the votes were tallied, all the delegates selected were Cruz supporters.
Of the 6 selected, the delegate in first place had 51 votes, I think they said the last selected delegate of the six chosen had 30.
Assuming that Cruz supporters voted for Cruz, and Trump supporters voted for Trump supporters, there were probably less than 30 Trump supporters at the District convention out of the 118 attending. This is a reasonable assertion, because some of the people, who voted for me, showed me their ballots and they were almost identical to mine. Also, we had fewer Trump supporters on the list of delegates.
Also even before the delegate names were put into nomination, I noticed the guy next to me had a list of the people he planned to vote for. So the Cruz people were organized before the convention as to who would be supporting Cruz on the ballot.
The Trump campaign needs to help Trump supporters organize for the state and national convention. This is a big expense for most of us and help to find rooms with good rates and close to the convention sites would be extremely helpful. A list of Trump supporters for the coming state convention would also be handy.
Some of the Cruz people said they planned to vote for Cruz only. Thats the difference between Cruz and Trump people. I couldnt vote for Cruz, but then if Cruz had won the state, I wouldnt sign up to be a delegate to take someone elses place, who could vote for either Cruz or Trump. I wouldnt be stacking the deck. If for no other reason, it is expensive to be a delegate and I wanted to do it for my candidate, but not for someone I dont support.
The attitude of some of the Cruz supporters is to steal the election from the people, who stood in lines for hours to vote. I was an election official this year and saw the turn out for myself. I reported to the polls before 6am and didn't leave until almost 11pm. The state also had a huge turn-out for early voting. The people wanted to vote for their candidate and not have their votes nullified by the party elites.
thank you for the reply. I guess my point was that you used the word “steal” and when pressed for further explanation you said this: “But stacking the deck is going on all over the country and Cruz supporters are very proud of this”. The stacking of the deck is HOW THE PROCESS IS DONE.
I completely understand the Trumpeters being unhappy about their candidate losing these delegates but their disapproval should not fall on Cruz who is merely campaigning according to the rules that have been in place, state by state, for years. Part of running for president is knowing this terrain. Rather, their anger should be directed at their own candidates campaign for not caring enough to follow through. There have been articles for the better part of a year about the ground game that Cruz was putting in place in every state. It seems that a prudent candidate would at least investigate why his opponent was doing that.
Cheers to you.
You must think that whoever the GOPee nominee is for the general election will be able to FORCE all those people who voted Republican in the primary, to vote Republican in the general election.
The ones who stood in line for the first time to vote for Trump won't show for anyone but Trump.
Face it - we had the November election in the bag two months ago. The GOPe threw it away by deliberately damaging its leading candidate, Trump.
Which they continue to do, daily.
I've got a bad feeling that when Trump's delegate numbers exceed 1,237, the GOPe will just change the rules.
If they are bound delegates, they have to vote for whoever won the state (or proportionally if that is the way the state goes).
If they are unbound, then they are unbound. This is why Trump is failing, he is placing all his bets on winning on the first ballot.
You Trump true believers make me laugh. Trump is a big loser in a general election, which is why all sensible people want to deny him the nomination.
That he makes it easy by not even trying to earn delegates is his own fault.
If Trump voters came out of the shadows to vote for the very first time and will disappear back into the shadows if they don’t get their way, then that is no big loss. A noisy, unappeasable minority is not a great asset.
“Nominate our guy despite the fact that 70% of the populace hates him, or we won’t vote for you.”
That would be a suicidal move, so don't expect that. If Trump gets a majority of delegates on the first ballot, he will win the nomination.
Trump will lose badly and will scapegoat the party and others.
“I’ve got a bad feeling that when Trump’s delegate numbers exceed 1,237, the GOPe will just change the rules.”
That’s my feeling too. It’s just a rule and they can change the rule since they are the ones who make the rules. They would rather have one of the elites from either party in than Trump.
The only voters who will show up in the general for a Cruz nominee are these zealous party insiders.
It'll be the quickest general election in decades.
ok, you’re opinion is duly noted. I disagree. But that wasn’t what was being discussed, was it?
The differences expressed by Freepers sort of reminds me of the differences between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark in the "Avengers" series. Rogers (Captain America) is a man out of time. Resuscitated from falling into suspended animation in the 40s, he retains the mores, optimism and beliefs of post WWII America, where the government is a force for good and can be trusted (never mind the later movie). Stark (Iron Man) on the other hand, is the ultimate cynic, wary of accepted standards of honesty or morality by one's actions, especially by actions that exploit the scruples of others (reminds me of a certain candidate - but I digress). Stark suspects the worst of any overarching organization.
Dave, Dave, Dave. Stop being a binary thinker. Not everyone who finds Cruz distasteful is a Trump supporter. Some of us have taken the measure of the man and come away terribly disappointed.
Yes. If all of this was happening with Democrats doing this to “Republicans,” the outcray would be deafening.
But BusTed gets away with this garbage.
I was addressing someone that was talking about how all of Trump’s new voters were going to take their ball and go home. I took that to be a Trump supporter.
I also take your point. I suppose there are some who think playing by the rules is so distasteful that they hate a guy who does it.
Not sure I understand, but OK. I was never a Cruz supporter. I am a Not Trump supporter and Cruz is all we have left now.
If Democrats were getting themselves named as delegates to the GOP convention? Is that what you meant?
The good news is that if Cruz is the nominee for the general, the GOPe will only have to rent one school bus per state to get all the Cruz voters to the polls...
Which is precisely what will happen. Cruz and Kasich will be responsible for handing the nomination to one of the GOPe's picks, who like in '08 and '12, will lose to the Democrat1. Then the GOPe - who hates Cruz, will seize the opportunity to stab him in the back, blaming him for the Republicans' loss (it's all Kabuki Theater). Win/Win for the GOPe, Lose/Lose for Cruz.
Kasich, who may not be as brilliant as Cruz, is much more savvy in the way of the GOP machinations (don't discount longevity in the GOP). I'm sure he's negotiated a nice cushy post-election position for himself.
Who do you guys think votes on the rules?
For now.
Just saw this.
Is this even legal?????
“3m3 minutes ago
