CLASSICAL MUSIC FOR CHAIR DANCING
BEETHOVEN: PIANO CONCERTO #5 IN E-FLAT, OP. 73, ALLEGRO MA NON TROPPO This finale from his last piano concerto is a rondo, so youll hear the opening theme a lot. Its in a rollicking 6/8, so feel free to roll around the room. The end is a classic way of making people think that its going to end quietly, but it doesnt!
This video is from the late Seventies when Mehta had just taken over in New York. Even though its in 6/8, Zubin uses conductors shorthand and conducts it in two, not six.

Have you been to Gitmo?
It is one godforsaken place. The heat, humidity and stagnant air are unbearable.

CLASSICAL MUSIC FOR CHAIR DANCING
VERDI: STRING QUARTET IN E MINOR, PRESTISSIMOGiuseppe Verdi Joe Green in English had gone to Naples to supervise the revival of two of his operas. In the fullness of his maturity, he had left his farm for what he thought would be an easy trip down the mountain. But the producers of one revival saw their line of credit run out, and they put Joe on hold while they tried to raise the cash. At the other revival, the soprano took ill. So there was Joe, sitting in his hotel room in Naples at the height of the rainy season, quietly steaming away.
Joe was familiar with the string quartet literature, so he said to himself, What the hell, and began plugging away at a quartet for the three weeks that he had to wait. He hired four musicians from the orchestra pit of one opera house and rehearsed them in his hotel room. The premiere of this quartet was held in that hotel room and attended by the friends he had in Naples. They loved it, but Joe didnt think it was worthy of his name. It was published in 1935, 34 years after Joes death at the ripe old age of 88. It has become a staple of the quartet repertory.
This movement is a scherzo and is often used as an encore at string quartet concerts. The middle section is a baritone aria for cello, and I know cellists who would kill to play it.

CLASSICAL MUSIC FOR CHAIR DANCING
TCHAIKOVSKY: SYMPHONY #6 IN B MINOR, OP. 74, ALLEGRO MOLTO VIVACEIn this symphony, there is one last moment of joy before it ends in sadness and death. This is a march, so in addition to dancing in your chair, youll need to grab a backscratcher or flyswatter to conduct this piece.
See you in two weeks.
