In a major shift of Catholic tenets of faith, pope releases paper instructing Catholics on how to live, tells them to accept homosexuals
Pope Francis, who has long revealed his liberal positions through interviews, came out on Friday in an official statement calling on Catholics to be more accepting of homosexuals as well as divorced Catholics.
While he didn't change official church doctrines in his paper, which is an "apostolic exhortation" instructing Catholics on how to live, the pope paved the way for a serious shift in the Catholic church away from central tenets of the faith.
"A pastor cannot feel that it is enough simply to apply moral laws...as if they were stones to throw at people's lives," he wrote in the paper, cited by CNN. "By thinking that everything is black and white, we sometimes close off the way of grace and growth."
"I understand those who prefer a more rigorous pastoral care which leaves no room for confusion. But I sincerely believe that Jesus wants a Church attentive to the goodness which the Holy Spirit sows in the midst of human weakness," he added.
"Every person, regardless of sexual orientation, ought to be respected in his or her dignity and treated with consideration."
Pope Francis' statements appear in his paper "On Love in the Family," entitled "Amoris Laetitia" in Latin. It spans over 260 pages, and is based on two conferences of the world's Catholic bishops known as synods, which were called by the pope.

How do Orthodox Jews treat Jews with homosexual attraction ?
And there it is...does anybody still have any confusion as to why this guy was made pope?
Come on Pope you can do better. I agree that all people should be treated with dignity. Because you see a homosexual doesn’t mean you should throw insults at them, bully them, or shun them. But being considerate is different than acceptance. We shouldn’t encourage, endorse, or otherwise make their choice feel normal. The alcoholic, the sex addict, the adulter, the thief, should all be treated in the same way
Bergoglio gives any Catholic who IS a Catholic plenty of cause for agita and for wishing an end to his papacy ASAP and that the next conclave elect an actual Catholic as pope. Off to the Unitarian rest home with Bergoglio. Ray Burke for pope!
... ignore everything before the BUT, what comes next is what I really intend. Bring the confusion!
Fixed it!
This Pope is inching towards gay weddings in catholic churches. If he lives another 10 years, I wager we'll see it happen.
Yes, it will. We have that on the very Highest Authority. No one ever promised that our popes would be sinless or perfect. We survived Alexander VI and numerous other quite gross excuses for popes. We will survive Bergoglio who is small potatoes by comparison.
I accept that they exist. Is that what he wants?
I’ve been a lurker for 20 years, but you’ve finally managed to get me to register in order to post a reply.
This proclamation by the Pope does nothing to change Church doctrine. He closes the door on gay marriage saying it cannot be seen as the equivalent of heterosexual unions. I’m sure my liberal brother-in-law is whining right now saying “just more hate the sin but loved the sinner #%$#, when is he going to embrace my brand of mindless modernism!!”
With the exception of his error on global warming, he has yet to say anything that offends my very conservative sensibilities.
You want to understand this pope? Do yourself a favor and look up Mark Mallett’s musings on the “Five Captains”: http://www.markmallett.com/blog/a-tale-of-five-popes-and-a-great-ship/
Please read what Pope Francis says, not what others say that he says. Look up the full context of the old “Who am I to judge” comment. You’ll might be surprised at how it has been twisted.
I accept homosexuals. I reject homosexuality.
Because it isn't true... same with most of the things you post about the Church.
“Confusion” is right.
Look at this:
Pope Francis offers hope to divorced Catholics, says no to gay marriage
At some point in our longing for a new and truly Catholic pope, we must stop excusing his administrative and verbal misbehavior by claiming it is the errors of the press, the media, his translators, his interlocutors, everyone but him. His papacy has been a rank disaster to date and does not seem likely to improve. New conclave (keenly aware of the blunder of the last one). New and genuinely hard-line, genuinely Catholic pope. ASAP.
Well said!
Evidence? I thought not.
I am sorry you feel that way. I most certainly was not referring to you. I was referring to such people/web sites as Robert Sungenis, Gerry Matatics, Tradition in Action, the St. Benedict Center, etc. I visit those sites occasionally to keep up with how conservative Catholics react to modernism, and unfortunately most of them are virulently anti-Jewish and really do believe that "the Jews" are behind every evil thing in existence.
I must remark that while I appreciate your concerns, you seem very inconsistent about "sowing dissension." Even though I know from our past interactions that you are a creationist, you allow--without objection--your co-religionists to promote evolutionism and higher criticism on this forum as Catholic distinctives, even attacking other chrstians who disagree with them. I have seen Catholic FReepers post articles attacking the facticity of Genesis 1-11 as an inherently "Protestant" position that somehow is based on sola scriptura (it's not).
If you aren't going to protest against these episodes of "sowing dissension," then your singling out of my own failures seems terribly arbitrary.
Get ready to accept pedophiles.
I don't know. Don't we all have an evil inclination that pulls us to various sins? The point is that male homosexual acts are literally capital offenses and are in fact "worse than murder." (Female homosexual acts are forbidden by the Sages.)
