AP-GfK Poll: Americans overwhelmingly view Trump negatively
AP ^ | April 7 2016 | Julie Pace Emily Swanson

For Americans of nearly every race, gender, political persuasion and location, disdain for Donald Trump runs deep, saddling the Republican front-runner with unprecedented unpopularity as he tries to overcome recent campaign setbacks.

Seven in 10 people, including close to half of Republican voters, have an unfavorable view of Trump, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. It's an opinion shared by majorities of men and women; young and old; conservatives, moderates and liberals; and whites, Hispanics and blacks — a devastatingly broad indictment of the billionaire businessman.

Even in the South, a region where Trump has won GOP primaries decisively, close to 70 percent view him unfavorably. And among whites without a college education, one of Trump's most loyal voting blocs, 55 percent have a negative opinion.

Trump still leads the Republican field in delegates and has built a loyal following with a steady share of the Republican primary electorate. But the breadth of his unpopularity raises significant questions about how he could stitch together enough support in the general election to win the White House.

It also underscores the trouble he may still face in the Republican race, which appears headed to a contested convention where party insiders would have their say about who will represent the GOP in the fall campaign.

"He's at risk of having the nomination denied to him because grass-roots party activists fear he's so widely disliked that he can't possibly win," said Ari Fleischer, a former adviser to President George W. Bush.

Beyond their generally negative perception of Trump, large majorities also said they would not describe him as civil, compassionate or likable. On nearly all of these measures, Trump fared worse than his remaining Democratic or Republican rivals.

Many millions WHO don’t like Trump will be voting for Trump.<<<

If he were that hated, he’d be drawing votes like Kasich or Fiorina.

Talk about lying when the truth works better, huh?

I hear you.

Vote totals are interesting, but nearly 2 out of 3 voters in the GOP primaries have chosen not to vote for Trump. Thats pretty close to the 7 in 10 mentioned in this story.

There’s a lot of hyperbole on both sides of this particular coin, but 37% is real, factual objective data.

A touch over one third does not rise to the level of the will of the people. That was opinion.

Yeah, sure.

That’s why his poll numbers consistently approach fifty percent.

More media bollocks.

I do not understand this logic, since it seems to be conflating popular vote with "Primary vote," and, presumably, caucus vote, which has a mixture of low population states and high population states. Popular vote totals are more effective means of determining how someone is liked since a low turnout state like Iowa can skew Trump's percentages down despite surpassing the total number of votes Romney received in the previous election. Trump won 42,000 votes in Iowa, and Santorum and Romney only won 29 thousand each.

I’ll vote for him if he wins the primary. I’ll vote for Cruz if he wins he primary. If figure it’s curtains if it’s not one or the other so the final option is to flush.

I just looked, and Trump is at 8 million votes, a million more than I thought he had, which puts him only 2 million short from what Romney got in 2012 by the end of the campaign, and only 4 million short from what Bush got in 2000. Bush's opponents mostly dropped out before March.

Comparing Trump's totals to Romney's is apple and oranges. The 2012 primary was decided pretty early in the process. After that, turnout dropped way off because it was no longer contested. Turnout has remained high this year because it continues to be contested.

For a guy unpopular with 7 out of 10, he’s getting a lot of votes...

And Reagan’s was 44% in 1980 and he wasn’t being dogged by his own party.

Only his millions of voters like him.

It is the 10's of millions that hate him that is the problem.

It looks very unlikely Trump will be able to do this.>>> certainly trump has made mistakes but the continuous anti trump message from the gopeee does take a toll on the regular folks.

They are starting to like him less.

When are the trumpers going to admit that the Donald is leading them down a garden path that ends in hell.

Hell as in Hillary.

If the good Lord’s willing,we can stop this creep from getting the nomination.

Speaking of creep ...

It has long been my theory that Donald Trump had cast an eye on Megyn Kelly long ago... if you know what I mean and I think you do.

That is why he was so devastated when she actually asked him a hard question.

It was not just because he can’t stand strong women, although he can’t. It was because he was a lover scorned.

Why do you think he’s kept up this infantile tweet war for months, he even tweeted about her yesterday.

In an interview with Katie Couric, Megyn skirted the issue of Trump’s stalking her but she did admit this:

“He’d call me after a segment that he enjoyed and say how great it was. He would send me clippings about myself — like, news clippings — that he would sign, ‘Donald Trump.’

It was nice. I appreciated that he was reaching out. There were some other gestures that he made that, in retrospect, I understand them better. I think he was trying to curry favor because he understood that he was gonna be running for president.”

No, Megyn, he was trying to curry favor because he had the hots for you and you scorned him.

He’ll never give it up.

No, they hate and fear Trump because of what Trump says and does and what he has said and done in the past.

He’s just a reality show celebrity that caught people’s fancy.

He’s a flim flam man.

He has a core of supporters who worship him, which isn’t all that healthy, but they are the very vocal minority.

He’s behaved immorally in his business life and in his personal life.

He’s a shallow narcissist fighting low self-esteem with naming buildings after himself and winning the hottest woman contest.

There is nothing to recommend him except his hyperbolic comments about making America great.

The problem is...he doesn’t know how.

He doesn’t even know how to run a campaign in which he had a huge head start and proceeded to lose.
