For Americans of nearly every race, gender, political persuasion and location, disdain for Donald Trump runs deep, saddling the Republican front-runner with unprecedented unpopularity as he tries to overcome recent campaign setbacks.
Seven in 10 people, including close to half of Republican voters, have an unfavorable view of Trump, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. It's an opinion shared by majorities of men and women; young and old; conservatives, moderates and liberals; and whites, Hispanics and blacks a devastatingly broad indictment of the billionaire businessman.
Even in the South, a region where Trump has won GOP primaries decisively, close to 70 percent view him unfavorably. And among whites without a college education, one of Trump's most loyal voting blocs, 55 percent have a negative opinion.
Trump still leads the Republican field in delegates and has built a loyal following with a steady share of the Republican primary electorate. But the breadth of his unpopularity raises significant questions about how he could stitch together enough support in the general election to win the White House.
It also underscores the trouble he may still face in the Republican race, which appears headed to a contested convention where party insiders would have their say about who will represent the GOP in the fall campaign.
"He's at risk of having the nomination denied to him because grass-roots party activists fear he's so widely disliked that he can't possibly win," said Ari Fleischer, a former adviser to President George W. Bush.
Beyond their generally negative perception of Trump, large majorities also said they would not describe him as civil, compassionate or likable. On nearly all of these measures, Trump fared worse than his remaining Democratic or Republican rivals.

Amen - The GOPe toadies and partisan pundits are quick to point to Trump’s negatives. AS IF the millions of dollars in negative ads by the other campaigns and PAC’s would help Trump’s image with the public???
They keep drumming up these “polls” that are supposed to show The Donald in a uniformly negative light, yet he does appeal to a LOT of people who would not really pay all too much attention to the political scene. And not just appeal, but ENTHUSIASM, of the kind that gets huge crowds out on sometimes dreadful weather, just for the chance to catch a glimpse of The Donald.
Even while visiting Wisconsin, and knowing the bad news that had dogged The Donald for the previous two weeks or so, he could dredge up some pretty decent crowds, and that was IN SPITE OF the anti-Trump massage that was bombarding him from every direction there. The liberals hated him, and the “conservative” radio hosts were perhaps only a little less subtle in their contempt, and still he made a decent showing.
The situation stands to be entirely reversed in New York a few days from now.
Now really, if it comes down to Herself versus The Donald, what Republican, who chooses to continue being a Republican, would vote for Herself over The Donald?
Yeah, sure.
That’s why his poll numbers consistently approach fifty percent.
More media bollocks.
That is a very nice picture, and I’m not primarily a Cruz fan. They both look earnest and well intended.
Polls are not being used to assess opinions these days, but to try to drive them.
The Dems, GOPe are all against Trump and are trying to discourage voters from supporting and voting for Trump, but hope that the voters are smarter than that.
GOPe is in bed with the Democrats for a Hillary presidency.
See:
Tech billionaires (major Dem donors and Hillary supporters) plot with GOP leaders at exclusive island resort to stop Trump
I know I really trust America in the hands of the AP-Gfk poll. This is BIG, don’tcha know.
LOL!
This AP poll is of the general electorate. This is the group Trump will face in the fall should he be the nominee. So far however, he has faced a different electorate: Republican primary voters. In some states, these voters are limited to Republican registered voters, while other states allow independents to vote in the primaries as well. Trump has a dedicated base of support on this primary electorate of 35-40%. Against a divided field of several other candidates, this has allowed him to win more delegates than anyone else, even though he has yet to win over 50% in any state, and his over vote total sits at 37%.
Trump has enough popularity among Republican primary voters to win primaries and delegates, yet he is unpopular among the Republican primary voters who support other candidates (Cruz, Rubio, Kasich) as well as among the broader electorate. For a Republican to win the presidency, they have to unite the Republican party, plus get a majority of independents. It looks very unlikely Trump will be able to do this.
Trump has received, to date, in the neighborhood of 37 percent of the votes cast in the GOP primaries. Cruz is the 28 percent range.
Neither guy is really tearing it up.

"Donald Trump raised a great daughter, what a failure!'" That's how desperate they are.
Great pic. Thanks. I’ll make my screensaver.
I thought the plastic groom was supposed to be on the top of the cake.
I just looked, and Trump is at 8 million votes, a million more than I thought he had, which puts him only 2 million short from what Romney got in 2012 by the end of the campaign, and only 4 million short from what Bush got in 2000. Bush's opponents mostly dropped out before March.
Thats why his poll numbers consistently approach fifty percent.

He has rec’d about 37% of the votes cast to date.
He’s over polling, it would seem.
Looking objectively, Trump's unfavorables have been "bad" the entire election, but apparently Trump will soon surpass Romney's total for the popular vote.
The greater nightmare we are facing is that the media & the left have gone a long way in “criminalizing” conservative thought in a large proportion of the population. Don’t matter if it is Trump, Cruz, or even a moderate like Scott Brown....the left owns the cultural machinery & churns out this nonsense 24/7.
This criminalizing of conservative thought has also helped newer immigrant groups like Asians & Indians move over into the democratic party as the GOP has been tarred as a white, bigoted party. This meme has taken hold of the political narrative and put the conservative movement on constant defense.
Except he’s winning by a wide margin.
Other than that, this is a good fantasy.
So, we just saw ARG be off by merely 20 points in one poll, but we are to believe a poll. Um hum.
Earlier the polls had Hillary winning Michigan by 20.
Selective? This is in line with other recent polls - he is fading, not growing support.
