In 1949 the Communists had recently taken over Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, and Albania, and were in the process of overrunning mainland China. The Soviet zone of Germany was being turned into another Communist dictatorship. The Greek Civil War was just ending--the Communists might have taken over that country if not for Truman's decision to help the anti-Communist side (and Tito's closing of the Yugoslav/Greek border after the break with Stalin).

People did not fully understand why this was happening (in some cases it was because the Red Army was present to assist the local Communists), but they knew they didn't want the same thing to happen in the USA. Even the Truman administration made some efforts to weed out Communists from the federal government. The Alger Hiss case attracted a lot of publicity.

I have never been inclined to give the communists a pass, they made Hitler and the Muslims look like pikers when it came to murder.

The things they did in the bowels of the Gulags to pass the time, such as having a female interrogator slowly crush the testicle of a male inmate with the toe of her shoe, to working people to death over the course of years, starving them the whole time is worthy of a stamp of evil in its own right.

The Communists didn’t go for the beheading, but the Muslims do it to deliberately terrify.

The Soviets and Chinese communists didn’t want to terrify as much as satisfy their sadistic tendencies to break up the boredom, amuse themselves, and pass the time.
