A better comparison is to the Red Scare of 1920, when bombs were blowing people up, labor unions were becoming radicalized as communists infiltrated them, and the IWW was trying to shut down the country with strikes. This crap was real and ongoing, just as jihad is today.

McCarthy was right, but since the communist infiltration was mostly hidden, the Red Scare then is not similar to the overt terrorism of today.

In the state of GA, the oath of office by state law for just about everyone, including local officials, still includes the assertion that the oath taker is not a member of the Communist Party.

I like that.

A tiny fraction of one percent of American adults were called to testify during the “Red Scare” (as he calls it). What had his grandfather been doing to give the impression that he was a Communist? They weren’t hauling people in off the street at random to testify.

To my knowledge, the "Reds" never hijacked airplanes and flew them into American buildings. So while paranoia may have played a role in the Red Scare, the hatred of muslimes is perfectly justifiable.

What is NOT justifiable is the ludicrous lengths its apologists will go to to try to make its mayhem seem normal.

Not, of course, unless you are shooting them in the back of their heads as they stood at the top of the stairs in a gulag, as described in ‘The Gulag Archipelago’.

But I know what you meant.

Jeh Johnson is indeed a moron. He only got to become Head of Homeland Security because...well, we all know why; it was the only qualification he needed as far as Obama was concerned.

“”noted that his grandfather was forced to testify in front of the House of Representatives in 1949.””

And exactly what brought his grandfather to the attention of the panel? His race? Or some fact conveniently left out? When we’ve been fed such garbage over the past 7 years, how are we ever going to believe any person who uses race baiting for every injustice they feel they have suffered since the day they were born. They could have the most legitimate reason and I still wouldn’t believe them.

The Republican candidates for the presidency are NOT TO BLAME for this belief - it comes from the murdering savages whose handiwork we experienced first hand on 9/11/01...and the bodies left around the world by these same savages.

I think Johnson has forgotten this day so do us all a favor and email these pictures to him to refresh his memory. Ask him for his comments too...The Republican candidates for president were at fault for this? Expect a “yes” answer from anyone connected to this administration!

Anyone who has read up on the second Red Scare knows that it was very real. That the commies had infiltrated the government especially the State Department, Hollywood and academia. They got knocked back a little but came back stronger than ever in the 60s.

Maybe he thought no one would check on his remarks and why he made them:

http://www.investors.com/politics/editorials/homeland-security-chief-jeh-johnson-another-obama-red-diaper-baby/

He likened the current climate of “fear, suspicions and prejudice” against Muslim immigrants to the Red scare and McCarthyism his grandfather, Charles S. Johnson, lived under in the 1940s and 1950s.

In 1949, Johnson, a sociologist and president of predominantly black Fisk University, was dragged before the House Un-American Activities Committee and “asked to deny if he is or ever has been a member of the Communist Party.”

The panel had good cause to investigate. Communists hadn’t just infiltrated Fisk as professors, but Johnson had readily hired them, including Giovanni “Ross” Lomanitz, a known communist operative.

Even after Lomanitz’s communist loyalties were exposed, Johnson spoke out on his behalf. Johnson then hired and defended yet another communist, math professor Lee Lorch. Johnson initially refused to fire him, but relented under withering criticism.

There was also the issue of Johnson’s own membership in communist fronts such as the National Sharecroppers Fund.

The National Sharecroppers' Fund that Charles S. Johnson was involved with was reputed to be a Communist front. Hard to say if that was true or not.

There were clear ties to the Socialist party, but that wasn't illegal. The Sharecroppers' Union was run by Communists, but that was a different outfit.

Johnson's uncle BTW was Dr. Kenneth Edelin who was involved in a controversial abortion case in the 1970s.
