Sorry to hear this. He was actually the last big name concert I went to (way back in ‘98). Mama Tried one of my all time favorites.

Sad news. He was one of the greats. I don’t listen to country music much anymore, but when I did, he was one of my favorites. His string of hits from the late 60’s to mid 70’s were great recordings.

He was supposed to come up my way back in about 1995 or 1996, but had to cancel due to health issues. RIP Merle, loved your music (including “Okie from Muskogee”) when my peers in university were spaced out on Zeppelin or grunge or alternative.

Whos gonna fill their shoes? -George JonesEverytime I hear of a country legend passing that's the first thing that comes to mind. To answer the question, nobody is filling their shoes. Especially with this "Bro Country" crap.

RIP......and country music slips away from it’s roots just a little bit further.
On a related subject, last CMA show I watched looked and moreover sounded like redneck hiphop to me and I don’t even like country all that much, but dadgum, it was bad. I just kept telling my wife “that’s not the country music my parents listened to when I was a kid”.
Goodbye Merle, you will be missed.
