Outsourcing the Educated

As unemployment has taken its toll on the United States, politicians continue to echo that education is the answer to the economic crisis. The question is: how will the well-educated ever provide for themselves when all the means to create wealth are flowing out of the country? Over the past twenty years, the United States has lost a massive number of lower and middle class value-added jobs. These are largely the manufacturing jobs that allowed the United States to support its own needs and export goods, which builds real wealth.

However, many major economists predict that job losses should be expected to continue across ALL levels of society if action is not taken. This is where we must ask if education alone can truly be the answer. Due to their successful policies, developing nations are amassing enough human capital to lure engineers and chemists to their shores. Those who study for years in the U.S. to find a skilled position are seeing their employment possibilities follow those of manufacturing overseas.

Only so many displaced factory workers can be sent back to school to become teachers, doctors or lawyers, and it appears that without further action these may be some of the only jobs available for the educated. The quest for these higher paying jobs leads many to take on considerable debt to finance their education. This debt is undertaken with the expectation that it will be easily paid back with a comfortable job.

While education is an important part of building a prosperous society, it is becoming evident that a country cannot educate itself out of this sort of crisis. Politicians need to reexamine their national priorities and enact policies to keep jobs in the United States. By working both harder AND smarter, it is possible to rebuild a balanced, thriving society

Well America needs waitresses and busboys too. Especially if they have “education,” like degrees in Critical Race Theory and Transgender Studies

Not everyone majors in those things. STEM grads are having a hard time.

It looks like the type of jobs that will be available will be similar to what’s found in the wealthiest communities - service jobs and niche businesses.

Hotel and restaurant work, boutiques, hair styling and nail salons, valets.

Pricey restaurants and custom-made work like putting “unique” cabinets in mansions or creating “unique” one-of-a-kind clothing or candies.

More extravagant toys and “experiences” for both children and adults.

Expensive “organic” foods.

Personal trainers and leisure experts, who do things like run “adult coloring book” clubs.

Hobbies will be more important than education, it looks like.

The highly educated can only survive in an economically vibrant society. After training for years to perform high-tech jobs, how are the highly educated supposed to eat if there are no farmers? Where do they live, if there are no builders?

Society truly does need people of all abilities to survive. We need them all working, here, not offshore someplace.

“Well America needs waitresses and busboys too.”

America needs plumbers, auto mechanics, HVAC installers, cabinet makers, electricians, machine operators, xray technicians, graphic artists, CAD operators, and many other people with vocational skills. Unfortunately the education establishment has shifted the focus of community colleges from vocational training to four year college prep. Not long ago I spoke to the owner of a HVAC company who built his small business from nothing to where it employs 50 people today. He said he has an immediate need for 10 more skilled repair people and installers. Unfortunately the local community college doesn’t provide any vocational training and he doesn’t have the ability to take on novice apprentices who can’t contribute.

Not everyone has the brains for STEM. Wish I did. You can drop me in the middle of Google, but I’ll never be a techie.

It isn’t easy to retrain for a different job. Education does not mean talent or expertise.

I was talking to a construction foreman I’d worked with many years ago. He’s getting ready to retire. His biggest concern is that not enough young people are entering the building trades to replace the skilled experienced people who are retiring.

Ending HB-1 visas and the permission to employ their spouses, as well as saying NO to letting foreign students work for a year or two after graduation under various waivers, will help a lot.

I suspect the grand plan is to fill the jobs with immigrants.

America needs plumbers, auto mechanics, HVAC installers, cabinet makers, electricians, machine operators, xray technicians, graphic artists, CAD operators, (etc)

One of the problems is that most of those occupations require entrants to have a certain skill-level in such things as math, communications, basic science, etc.

High schools are graduating people who couldn't even qualify to get into those fields... but sadly, they can go to college, take remedial reading and graduate with worthless degrees in things that end in "studies".

Who is “Economy in Crisis”?

According to their “Who We Are” page (1), only the following three people are named: a 9/11 Truther, a radical left-wing Air America personality and a regular Huffington Post contributor. If you disagree with those sources, you may wish to reconsider the general validity of this article.

Here are the people listed on the “Economy in Crisis” “Who We Are” page:

PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS - 9/11 TRUTHER (2):
Roberts comments on the “scientific impossibility” of the official explanation for the events on 9/11. On August 18, 2006, he wrote:

I will begin by stating what we know to be a solid incontrovertible scientific fact. We know that it is strictly impossible for any building, much less steel columned buildings, to “pancake” at free fall speed. Therefore, it is a non-controversial fact that the official explanation of the collapse of the WTC buildings is false.... Since the damning incontrovertible fact has not been investigated, speculation and “conspiracy theories” have filled the void.[42]

In November 2012 Roberts, referred to al Qaeda’s role in the attack as “unsubstantiated.”[43]

THOM HARTMANN – AIR AMERICA RADIO (3)

“Thom Hartmann is the #1 progressive radio talk show host in the US”

PAT CHOATE – HUFFINGTON POST (4)

“In 1996, he was Ross Perot’s vice presidential running mate.”

“A man is known by the company he keeps.” If you don’t prefer to keep company with 9/11 Truthers, Air America, The Huffington Post, and central_va, please do skip this article.
