I was surfing FR this afternoon and suddenly was unable to access any page on FR and the error stated the server could not be found.
I located the IP address, 209.157.64.200, of the server and then added an entry into my PC's host file and I can now see FR again.
I still do not see a DNS entry for FR, and that is interesting.
Microsoft support page. “Hosts file Windows 10’
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/search?query=Hosts%20file%20Windows%2010
The two numbers are already in my DNS when I am in wireless mode, but for some reason, last night I couldn’t connect to FR while wireless, using either Safari or Firefox. It was only when I used my ethernet connection that I was able to connect to FR on both Firefox and Safari. When using the ethernet connection, the only two numbers in my Network System Preferences, DNS option are the ones for Time Warner. And when I try to add 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 under the Time Warner numbers, it erases Time Warner’s numbers, so I had to cancel the option of adding them there.
Strange, today so far (keeping my fingers crossed), it’s working on both ethernet and wireless connections.
Yes I have not been able to get on Free Republic since yesterday afternoon. I also have Suddenlink service. The only way I got on just now was via my cell phone when I turned off the Wi-Fi and use the Verizon data.
Happening now in Louisville with TWC
It’s more than Frontier Communications. I’m using Time Warner Road Runner on my MacBook Pro, and couldn’t connect to FR last night while in wireless mode. It was only after turning on my ethernet connection that I was finally able to connect. This problem was with both Safari and Firefox. Today I tried it in both modes, and it worked fine. Don’t know what the hell happened last night, but thankfully it’s working now. Keeping my fingers crossed.
You may have needed to go to DOS and flushed the DNS or rebooted the machine to get it to work.
ipconfig /flushdns (assuming PC). My Mac changed right away.
I get the DNS message when trying to log in from my desktop but no problems getting in with my phone.
How do you change dns servers?
Think of DNS as a phone book of Internet addresses. When you type in freerepublic.com, there is a directory information call made to your DNS server that essentially says what is freerepublic.com’s “phone” (IP) number. Your computer then calls that number. and the page pops up in your browser. In this case when many people here call their “directory assistance” the idiot at the other end of the line says, I don’t know, so no page pops up. You can set your computer to call different directory assistance or you can just tell your computer that freerepublic.com has the number 209.157.64.200 like I did.
I was having the same problems this morning. And my problem seems to be Mozilla Firefox. I went to Google and it’s working fine. Went back to Firefox and it re-routes me to Time Warner.
It has seemed to be a wifi problem!!!
Still cannot find FR from Comcast. I ping it.
C:\Users\BC-Netbook>ping freerepublic.com
Ping request could not find host freerepublic.com. Please check the name and try again.
Whew, this works for ipads too. Go to where your wifi settings are and click the little i at the end. Put in the two numbers that other freepers have listed for the DNS.
Sad to wake up with no FR. I found a way to click the TWC links and read FR, but then found that not being able to comment is as painful as the heartbreak of psoriasis.
I just did it with same setup you have. Go to your wifi and after your network name click the little i for info on an apple device, or whatever info link there might be on a non apple device. Then you can change the dns numbers.
It was the reverse for me, TWC at least had FR working links on their info page that I could get on and read, but I couldn’t even get onto FR at all on Chrome.
So these clowns are messing with FR's name? Them Turkeys!
Any word on this? Thanks.
I had Verizon, it changed to Frontier I went on line typed in search engine open DNS iPad OMG very simple step by step with pictures!!! I was up and running again!!! My android phone is a bit trickier I will work on that later !!!!
I have been using a couple DNS server libs propose from some of the Mac websites 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 those seemed to be blocking Freerepublic for me. I had to actually remove them to log into FreeRepublic.
OMG that is a GREAT explanation, Thank you for explaining this to me in DNS for dummies language!!! I TOTALLY understood what DNS is now!!! You are AMAZING!!!!
