A man trying to save a dog from an oncoming train was struck and killed after he pushed the dog off the tracks, authorities said.

The man, described as being in his early 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The dog avoided injury.

The incident took place behind the property at the end of Gomes Road just northeast of Johansen High School, which is on Claus Road.

The man was walking along Dry Creek with the dog and a woman when he took the dog off the leash, according to Lt. Marc Nuno of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

The large dog, reported as a boxer or bullmastiff mix, ran toward the tracks as a train, estimated to be going about 45 mph, was rushing closer. The man ran to the tracks and pushed the dog out of the way, but then was struck.

I will never forget the time the wind was blowing west as I sat upon a platform reading a book.
An eastbound express train with more than a dozen cars zoomed past and I never even heard it coming.
That experience taught me to NEVER divert my eyes when crossing tracks whether in my car, on a bicycle, or on foot.
A speeding train can come upon you in an instant.

Yeah, dumb maybe. But I can think of worse things to die for than saving a dog. Just my $0.02.

Agree completely. I can’t imagine the devastation his parents must feel-I’d never be able to look at that dog again with out breaking down.

Yep. A little kid may be worth risking your life to save. A dog definitely is not.

Exactly I seen some severe crashes because people have tried to avoid hitting animals.

Even very small ones that would do no damage to the vehicle what so ever.

Pets are pets they are replaceable.

And worse people go around with their headphones listening to music and don’t hear a thing.

I got sick to my stomach last year when I ran over a squirrel, but there’s no way I was going to risk an accident, he just darted out onto the street at the wrong time. I’d never run over an animal before, I can only imagine the trauma of running over someone’s pet.

That being said, still, not worth risking your life to avoid it.

Hey, I’m OK with this. He made a choice and a calculated decision. He lost. I prolly wouldn’t have made that choice.

When we were a mostly rural society the killing of animals for food and other legitimate reasons was an normal fact of life.

Just your reaction of being sick because you ran over a small varmint.

Shows how far from are roots we have come.

What is going to happen when some thing real tragic happens.

Well you be able to function and save your life or someone else’s.

I have no qualms about killing animals for food. But that doesn’t mean we should be so callous about the lives of animals.

Have you ever killed an animal for food your self.

It is not callous it is a fact of life.

I love dogs as much as anyone, but if you’re going to save a dog, make damn sure you aren’t going to get killed in the process. It’s not a fair trade.

Yea, my entire bloodline is dog obsessed, but I think even the most obsessed among us (all of us would claim that prize) would not put themselves at that kind of risk.

I hope.

No, I have not been in that situation. But if I had to, I wouldn’t hesitate.

Another possibility is that if he indeed unleashed the dog, he may have felt responsible and that probably clouded his thinking just enough.

Many people cannot understand the bond that develops between people and pets.

It’s on my to do list.

Because the day is fast approaching when the technology we rely on is suddenly not going to be available.

Back in the 1800s and early 1900s when there were very few roads out in the country, the number of deaths by being hit by a train was huge. This is because people on foot or horseback would use the train tracks to travel from town to town. They wouldn’t hear the train approaching from behind and that was the end of the line for them.
