Sen. Ted Cruz refused to say Tuesday whether he would still back Donald Trump if the GOP presidential front-runner wins their party’s nomination, backing away from a firm pledge he made earlier in the campaign.
Mr. Cruz, whose coziness with Mr. Trump last year had pundits saying they were in the middle of a bromance, said that faded once the billionaire businessman began to turn nasty, and particularly in recent days when Mr. Trump has said he would go after Mr. Cruz’s wife.
“I’m not an easy person to tick off, but when you go after my wife, when you go after my daughters, that does it,” Mr. Cruz said at a town hall hosted by CNN in Wisconsin Tuesday night.
He accused Mr. Trump of being behind a thinly sourced story last week in the National Enquirer tabloid that reported Mr. Cruz had engaged in affairs with a handful of women. The story aggregated rumors, and the only named source was Roger Stone, an adviser to Mr. Trump, who said: “These stories have been swirling around Cruz for some time. I believe where there is smoke there is fire.”
Mr. Cruz also backed away from the pledge all of the candidates took last year to back the eventual nominee no matter who it is. Mr. Cruz ducked repeated direct challenges by CNN host Anderson Cooper to take a firm stand, saying instead that his goal now is to make sure he doesn’t face that choice.
“The answer to that is to beat him at the ballot box,” Mr. Cruz said.
Mr. Cooper, though, said Mr. Trump had made controversial statements about women and minorities last year, even as Mr. Cruz was praising him: “Sounds like you were engaged in a love fest,” Mr. Cooper said.

No doctor, but let me ask you a question. In all the time we've been on FR how many posts have you seen where a Freeper becomes agitated because some politician or talking head, in attempting to talk about an issue, phrases it in such a way as to leave the Freeper wanting? "Oh God! If only he/she said it this way, used this turn of phrase or brought up this factoid."
Why the obsession with the, 'fixed-it' phenomenon? It's like an itch that can't be scratched. For a lot of people here a certain candidate is scratching it for them to their relief.
Because of that phenomenon I'm a Trump skeptic. People are deriving too much emotional satisfaction from his candidacy. Not just here on FR but in the general public as well. And for myself personally, I'm suspicious of such movements.
I’m glad Cruz said this. I don’t particularly like Cruz, mostly because I think he has good positions but he can’t negotiate very well, but I’d vote for him - although there were others I would have preferred.
Trump is disgusting and there’s no way I’d vote for him. I don’t care who supports him, he’s horrible and is only about Trump. For all you who think he loves you and will support you...he’d sell you out in a heartbeat. For Trump, it’s all about Trump.

I have been paying attention to politics and been involved in it all of my life. I have worked on local, state, and national campaigns since I was a teen. I grew up knowing pols, the backroom boys, and also know American political history. Whether you want to believe anything I say, or not, is is no skin off my nose, but it is off yours!

Ok, I get it. People are emotional. Well, just maybe some of that "emotion" has be generated and driven by the last 7+ years of Obama. Voters CRAVE change and get emotional about it. SO WHAT! What is really frustrating for former Cruz supporters who see him as a liar is the fact that he lies mainly for his supporters. He can’t really lie to those who don’t support him, we see the real Cruz. He literally knowingly lies to those who trust and believe in him. That is disgusting.
