The Conservative Political Action Conference earlier this month almost made me forget about this fancy piece of fiction from The New York Times editorial board, which is that the AR-15 is an automatic weapon. The board was voicing their support for Americans to sue the gun industry; it’s a position that would certainly be abused by anti-gun liberals to litigate the gun manufacturers out of existence. We cannot let that happen. This nauseating March 4 op-ed was written as the families of Sandy Hook wait to hear if their lawsuit against Remington Arms can move forward:

You cannot fire a three, four, or any round burst unless the weapon is auto. The AR’s I see are semi auto and thus single shot. Yes, I recall the conversion kits from the various mags and trade pubs.

You cannot convert an AR into burst mode without the auto-sear, M16 bolt carrier, and the the selector group. Further, in most cases (but not all, depending on the lower specs) you have to machine the lower receiver deeper in the fire control area to accept those components. HTere are a few holes that need to be drilled as well and unless you have a jig to caaomplish this, it’s not that easy.
Further, the fire control group and the sear are NFA items that cannot be purchased without a valid permit.
The article is written in ignorance of course.
But what the AR15 CAN do is much more useful to the mass murderer than firing in “bursts”, which is much less useful for this sick purpose. With the semi auto AR15 one can very rapidly aquire, aim at and fire, one or two shots, and on to the next target very quickly. It’s the combination of handiness, low recoil, quick cycling, and enough rounds in the magazine. In a few seconds one can individually engage a dozen to two dozen targets.
Auto fire would be less effective. It would waste ammo, require more effort to control per engaged target. For a given number of rounds in the magazine and a given length of time, one can shoot more people semi auto than full auto. Full auto is meant for use in military situations to suppress the other side (get them to stay behind cover), which isn’t what the mass murderer wants to do. Frankly I don’t see why full auto weapons are banned, they are less deadly.

INALIENABLE Rights (that shall NOT be infringed) is key when discussing the 2nd Amendment. ‘Self-defense’ is but a vector in trampling said Right to the Left.
Understand. Years ago up to about 1986 one could buy the kit with the parts for about 50 buckds provided one was a decent gunsmith. I had a friend who was the best 45 man I ever saw,. He also made pool cues.
