It's snow wonder why people are leaving Chicago faster than any U.S. city

When "polar vortex," "below zero" and "rapid weather change" have become integrated into the vocabulary of every Chicagoan, it's snow wonder why:

In 2015, the Chicago region saw its first population decline in more than two decades, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released Thursday. The Windy City's drop-off also was higher than any metropolitan area in the U.S.

People are giving Chicago and Illinois the cold shoulder and migrating to states such as Florida, Arizona and Nevada, where they can enjoy warmer and much less moody climates. Can you blame them?

Imagine lying poolside in the sunshine and not feeling a need to pack an umbrella, snow boots and tank top every time you leave the house. *Sigh* Although we should consider ourselves lucky this year—Mother Nature didn’t carry out her typical winter vendetta.

Despite this winter’s warmer-than-usual weather, the Chicago region lost an estimated 6,263 residents in 2015, according to census data.

And new residents and births couldn’t offset the number of residents who have left the Chicago area since 2010—about 80,000 in all. Clearly, not enough people are gettin' it on, amiright? And Cook County’s population dropped 2.4 percent from 2014, leaving the county with a population of about 5.2 million.

Two other contributing factors in Chicago’s population dip are a diminished Mexican immigrant population and a "dramatic decline" in the city’s African-American population, according to data gathered by Rob Paral and Associates, a firm owned by Chicago-based demographer Rob Paral.

Fortunately, young, college-educated people (who don't know any better when it comes to the city's weather) are flocking to Chicago. Unfortunately, it's nowhere near the number of people leaving the state.

Windy in Chicago? You must be crazy, who ever heard of such a thing? What is the nickname of Chicago?

I left New York for Georgia on gun laws, taxes, and winter.

I have never looked back.

My brother moved to LA, some cousins too. My mom has talked about the San Diego area.

Nice weather surely but otherwise.......I think I’d prefer staying here. Mexico may annex California soon.

My other brother is thinking of moving to Seattle or Portland...got a cousin out there too. Liberal hellholes.

Georgia, my uncle moved his family there 25 years ago, he loves it. The Braves and Falcons are “us” now.

For all of its faults, NJ was a great place to live until the public employees’ unions made the cost of living prohibitive; their wages/benefits rose to ridiculous levels during the good times, and have not changed to reflect the economic misery that has plagued the private sector here. We’ve lost a lot of good-paying jobs, which even the large number of McJobs can’t replace; employers and those workers who can are fleeing, while retirees as well can’t stay (property taxes “frozen” at retirement are still very high, and you have to pay up front - receiving the refund the next year).

In good times it was great to live in a state with the ocean and mountains each an hour away in different directions, plenty of farmland (the “Garden State”), and now it is just falling apart. The future looks bleak because like many of the original colonies, the infrastructure is so old and accommodating so many more people that replacing it is a cost few taxpayers (corporate or individual) want to bear. In terms of nature, we rarely have tornadoes, few earthquakes (usually limited to sparsely populated former iron mining regions in the north), we usually just catch the tail end of hurricanes, and even the winters are mild in comparison to those a couple of hours north in upstate NY. Maybe other states have this balance in terms of nature; I don’t know enough about them. I’ll take your word for it on South Carolina; I doubt I’d like the heat much.

Here in NJ there are sometimes news stories describing how towns use their whole snow removal budget in one bad storm...

Must be that darn global warming.

The truth is the winters are very average but the snow removal budget is the easiest to trim to pay teachers (working & retired); when the snow shows up, everyone realizes their town has set aside $100 for the whole winter...

the world is too much.

I bought stuff at Starbucks this afternoon .... rarely go there. I come home, get on ESPN.com and immediately have Starbucks ads coming up.

they got my CC tracked with my internet service ... connected. Too much. The hidden brain behind the curtain knows everything ... glad I pay cash for most everything.

Advertising, what can you say.

Dirty hippies have a point when they criticize it.

Just wait till they can beam ads directly into your brain.
