Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) on Wednesday blasted Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for suggesting police escalate their surveillance of Americas Muslim communities.
Its bad policing, he told host Chris Hayes on MSNBCs All In." "It doesnt help us get safer. It does undermine the rights of U.S. citizens and residents.
Were not going to let go of our American value system just because Ted Cruz is scared and doesnt actually want to do the hard work of actually making America safe and would rather just scapegoat a religious minority.
Ellison, who practices Islam, said his experiences living in Minnesotas Muslim neighborhoods disprove Cruzs suggestion they may hide future jihadists.
Im from Minnesota [and] Im a few blocks away from where he might be talking about in terms of Muslim neighborhoods, he said of Cruz, a GOP presidential candidate.
I can tell you this neighborhood is full of excellent, hard-working and patriotic people who love this country and make it better all the time. Im offended for them, Im offended with them.
Ellison additionally accused Cruz and Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump of using Tuesdays terrorist attacks in Brussels, Belgium, for scoring political capital.
I am so broken-hearted for the people of Brussels, said Ellison, who has endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in his Democratic presidential bid. "My sympathies go out to them. It is incredibly sad that their tragedy ends up being a political football in the United States.
People like Ted Cruz and Donald Trump try to exploit this for electoral gains. The fact is that what both Ted Cruz and Donald Trump have said is reprehensible, unconstitutional, counterproductive, wrong and bad policing, as [New York Police Department Commissioner] Bill Bratton has made clear.
At least 30 died and more than 200 others were wounded during a string of coordinated attacks across Brussels early Tuesday morning.
The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has since claimed responsibility, reigniting a national debate on the relationship between law enforcement and Muslim Americans.
Cruz called for increased police surveillance of Muslim American neighborhoods after the attacks, while Trump reiterated his past calls for a temporary ban on the Islamic faithful entering the U.S.
When Islam acts like a real religion, instead of a violent Theocracy, then and only then will I fee safe.
cops on patrol are to me much less effective than cops undercover.
It seems that black undercover cops in mosques are the most effective way to gain intelligence. bugs and cameras and transmitters and such will be more effective than waving the flag.
Maybe Rep Keith Ellison (Allah be praised) could kindly explain how many weapons are kept in churches and temples? In France they found 300 in just three mosques. How many attacks were prevented when Muslims contacted authorities about future jihadists? How many marches have you lead Keith, in protest of Muslim violence? How much has the Muslim community donated to help victims of terrorist attacks? Thats why we need to keep an eye on you, you and your religion cannot be trusted to uphold western values of civilization.
You’re exactly right, Ellison is a Muslim activist and extremist in my view.
Morning to you too, Joe.
You couldn’t be any more correct. Many terrorists and supporters of terrorism in the US have been linked to Mosques in the US, imagine that.
I know that some Mosques preach this type of stuff. Most do not.
Why do those who do not speak up and denounce?
In N.Y. under this mayor they can’t even infiltrate the crazy ones.
That's the thing that baffles me most. The Muslims keep shouting they're a religion of peace but they don't come forward and report the radical extremists, it's awfully difficult to take them at their word.
as a result, eventually folks everywhere will fail to trust any Muslim.pity.
