Apparently, it's not enough that UND's administration is attacking the quality of education by cutting programs and experienced faculty and jacking class sizes. Now, we must also feel under physical attack as well.
I look up from my office computer to see two figures in camo with guns outside my window. My first thought is for my students' and my safety: I grab my phone, crawl under my desk and call 911. The dispatcher keeps me on the line until someone can see if ROTC is doing maneuvers.
I can barely talkfirst, with fear, and then with rage when the dispatcher reports back that yes, in fact, I've probably just seen ROTC cadets, though they're going to send an officer to check because no one has cleared it with them. They thank me for reporting it.
A few minutes later, a university officer calls me backnot to reassure me, but to scold me for calling 911. He says ROTC has permission to do this exercise. When I tell him that this was news to 911 and that they encouraged me to call whenever I see a gun on campus, he seems surprised.
He also tells me that ROTC will be doing these exercises for the next couple weeks.
So I reply that I guess I'll be calling 911 for the next couple weeksand I will. Every time.

We are dealing with an English professor here so it most likely happened.
North Dakota. But then I’m so old that when I was in grade school they still taught geography!
I’m going to stand up for her, How the heck was she supposed to know the good guys from the bad, Anyone can get camo and shootings have happened.
I think she’s unreasonable when she says she’ll continue to call 911.
Grand Forks news is a BIG clue.
somebody call the WAHmbunalce!!!
that’s WAHmbulance...i either can’t type, can’t spell, or both
Surprised?
“Hello, and thanks for stopping by my site. Let me introduce you to my work.
My new collection, Self-Portrait as Bettie Page (Barefoot Muse, 2013), is a sonnet sequence that negotiates the relationship between formal poetics, bondage/discipline, and female identity through the figure of elusive 1950s pinup Bettie Page, whose own identity was a series of costumes.
My last chapbook, Hiking the Maze (Finishing Line, 2009), uses the setting of the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park, Utah to explore both the origins of and the maze-like ambiguities of language through a speaker who achieves an ecstatic paralinguistic experience.
I recently completed a poetry manuscript, Maternal Imagination, which represents the female perspective on the monstrous body, since so many of the texts attribute fault to the mother: her imagination, accusations of sex with demons or animals, and even contemporary issues like thalidomide. I am also expanding into translation and creative nonfiction, and its both scary and exciting to flex new writing muscles.”
This is what your kids are dropping 20K/year for?!
ROTC students where ROTC uniforms. They are all over campus twice a week. Many no doubt sit in the professors classroom, so she should have some clue as to what their uniforms look like.
I seriously doubt that they were “performing military maneuvers” on campus. Probably more like drill practice.
Heidi needs to buy a clue.
Try this scenario on for size. You work on a major college campus in a building that consists of both offices and classrooms, including a program that teaches English to foreign nationals (high percentage are from the middle east) who come to the US specifically to take this program. You’re walking down the hall and see two black backpacks, lying in the hall outside a classroom. Nobody is in the immediate vicinity. What’s your response?
Or survive outside academia.
Maybe this elitist thinks herself too good to read the memo or newsletters.
Well she is the new breed of English professor-everything is based on racism, sexism, ableism, classism, etc.
Just reading her letter, I knew we were not dealing with a scholar of Chaucer or Homer.
Home of the Snowflakes.
Speaking of English professor, the commercial on college basketball is a scream! The mother is being dropped off at a Buffalo Wild Wings and the two kids in the back seat are telling her they’ll miss her. The boy says his stomach hurts already. The little girl says “why can’t we watch basketball too?” That’s when the little boy says, “we don’t get to, dads an art major!” LOl Funny as all heck. But of course I live in crazy Indiana. College basket time is the biggest highlight of our year!
She must be a Drama major.
The prof is an idiot for her petulant reaction to being told the ROTC exercise would be continuing for the rest of the week, and for her liberal/snowflake reaction to the existence of ROTC. The University and the ROTC command there are idiots for not at least notifying faculty and emergency responders that there would be personnel wearing military clothing and carrying weapons on campus, and that those personnel would be conducting combat-related exercises.
Frankly, given the social climate, I’m glad it was her calling the cops (and props to 911 for actually checking first), rather than having some gung-ho Operator wannabe on the local police force seeing an armed cadet and deciding he needed to “take down the shooter now” (pew pew pew pew pew pew pew pew pew pew pew reload ‘murika).
All they had to do was announce that ROTC was doing exercises, and there likely would have been no problem.
It took the NCAA years of being offended (by a logo drawn by a Native American, with approval of the Spirit Lake Sioux Elders) to get enough lawyers together to make the University get rid of the logo. Nice of that bunch of pissants to be offended for people who were not offended (as if they were not 'smart' enough to take offense to something which was not derogatory in the first place).
Now the "Fighting Hawks". Just wait until the birdwatchers get a hold of that...
Stupid is no joke.
Well, maybe sometimes.
