Her family disputed the police account of her death, saying Beaty would know better than threaten police.
“She’s very smart, very intelligent. I don’t believe she was brandishing a weapon,” her sister, Kendra Beaty, told the Virginian-Pilot.
“Her automatic reaction would have been to drop and say, ‘It’s not real.’ She would not have gone to jail over a toy gun.”

There was a story a few years back in NYC involving a teen thug who aimed his Saturday-night special at a cop. Po' De-sha-wan was quickly dispatched with a severe case of lead poisoning courtesy of one of New York's men in blue.
At the press conference afterwards, some idiot reporterette actually asked the NYPD representative why the officer had to resort to deadly force; couldn't he have just "shot the gun out of his hand?"
The, "beezy," part of her nickname needs to be changed to, "wazy".

Seems to me that the logical consequence of brandishing a fake gun would be that a real one would appear, pointed at the one doing the brandishing. Whether that’s due to police arriving or someone else, it just seems the logical consequence. What was she trying to accomplish?
