Republican Leaders Map a Strategy to Derail Donald Trump (Coburn or Perry 3rd party candidate)
New York Times ^ | March 19, 2016 | ALEXANDER BURNS and JONATHAN MARTIN

Republican leaders adamantly opposed to Donald J. Trump’s candidacy are preparing a 100-day campaign to deny him the presidential nomination, starting with an aggressive battle in Wisconsin’s April 5 primary and extending into the summer, with a delegate-by-delegate lobbying effort that would cast Mr. Trump as a calamitous choice for the general election.

Recognizing that Mr. Trump has seized a formidable advantage in the race, they say that an effort to block him would rely on an array of desperation measures, the political equivalent of guerrilla fighting.

There is no longer room for error or delay, the anti-Trump forces say, and without a flawlessly executed plan of attack, he could well become unstoppable.

But should that effort falter, leading conservatives are prepared to field an independent candidate in the general election, to defend Republican principles and offer traditional conservatives an alternative to Mr. Trump’s hard-edged populism. They described their plans in interviews after Mr. Trump’s victories last Tuesday in Florida and three other states.

The names of a few well-known conservatives have been offered up in recent days as potential third-party standard-bearers, and William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, has circulated a memo to a small number of conservative allies detailing the process by which an independent candidate could get on general-election ballots across the country.

Among the recruits under discussion are Tom Coburn, a former Oklahoma senator who has told associates that he would be open to running, and Rick Perry, the former Texas governor who was suggested as a possible third-party candidate at a meeting of conservative activists on Thursday in Washington.

Mr. Coburn, who left the Senate early last year to receive treatment for cancer, said in an interview that Mr. Trump “needs to be stopped”

You didn’t hear. He said he would NOT fund it if they keep doing abortions. That’s what he said. NOT.

I went back and looked it up.

Seemed fine to me. If you didn’t like what I insinuated about Trump’s relationship with Kardashian, I don’t see your problem.

Trump has a long history of bragging about sexual conquests and even has a history of serial adultery of which he seems to be quite proud.

You didn’t know that?

So sorry to disillusion you.

I am not hateful. I am a really sweet person.

I heard perfectly well. He will continue to support Planned Parenthood but ask them not to do abortions.

I want someone who will be passionate about defunding Planned Parenthood, not sticking with them with a little advice to go easy on the abortions.

post 96-Wake up Altura. Cruz is a fraud. All he does is belittle Trump with innuendo and false accusations. I contributed to his campaigns twice, like so many of us on this site did. Gradually more and more info came out about his lying. If you care about the truth you will be honest with yourself. The vote stealing in Iowa did it for me. God bless.

“Why say something so incorrect as to tarnish one’s name on FR to the point of nobody wanting to take future posts by you seriously?”

It was a response to all the if you support Trump you are “X”......

I should point out that I hate Cruz for allowing this to happen. Would never support this man in a million years. I know where the loyalties of the people are

Perry is no conservative. He supports open borders & worked with his friend, the Aga Khan, to introduce Islamic curriculum in Texas schools. It would be a cold day in Hell before I would vote for Perry.

Hillary will be no better or worst that Cruz or Kasich. They are all politicians. Stop letting people put it into your heads that X President will be the worst in a lifetime and blah blah blah. There is divided government and no one can do anything with the approval the congress. Obama, for all the flack he takes here, did nothing on his own (save for a few executive actions which can easily be undone). Obamacare couldn’t have passed without going through committee and the Republicans that you’ll bend over backwards to support let it happen. They also fund it with every budget. The Iran deal was ratified by congress. Both judges were confirmed by the Senate. Bottom line, if Obama’s policies are socialist then the congress’ policies are also socialist and guess who owns both houses of congress. If Hillary is able to destroy the country it’s only because the citizens, the congress and the supreme court are on board. I guess it’s nice to yell at Obama and call him the worst President and blah blah blah but he can do nothing on his own. He’s not a dictator. Stop falling for this foolishness or you’ll never have any real change and the country will never go back to its founding

I want a president who will be pro-Israel, not neutral.

No you don't, you just want Cruz and you can't have him because he is unelectable.

Do you know why we have planned parenthood, ObamaCare, National Endowment for the Arts and a host of other distasteful agencies? Because the GOP want them and that is a fact.

Is that supposed to be an excuse to vote against Trump if he is successful in the primary and let Hillary be elected because a third party shill is run by the GOPe?

Everyone on this forum is fully aware Congress is partly responsible for the mess we’re in now but that doesn’t mean 0bama isn’t a Marxist tyrant that should have been impeached.

Many in the GOPe deserve to be shown the door but if Trump is elected president maybe some of these elitist pubbies may take notice and decide the citizens of this country may well show them that door.

Nope, I am all in for Trump but if it’s stolen from him anybody but Hillary shouldn’t reward the GOPe. They need to fall this year no matter what. The chance exists with Trump to destroy the GOPe and elect a non politician but aside from that they should be left with the least amount of electoral votes possible. A close lose isn’t enough to show them anything. They need to lose everywhere if they screw the vote by taken it from Trump

Your post, dp, perfectly expresses the rage we are all feeling about the takeover of our country by fascist thugs that only want to destroy this country. The MSM keeps saying that Trump is getting the angry vote. They don’t get it - wecare beyond angry, we are enraged! Livid!

Trump didn’t cause it - he only expresses it in ways no other candidate ever has!
