Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said Sunday that people mistakenly believe he is proposing free college for all, when in fact he is proposing free tuition at public colleges and universities. […]

“Like you, I came from a family that didn’t have a lot of money, first generation to go to college, but I want every kid in this country who is in the sixth grade or the fourth grade to understand that if he or she studies hard, does well, they will be able to go to college regardless of the income of their family, and we are going to pay for that,” he added.

Sanders said he would pay for his $70 billion a year plan by imposing a tax on Wall Street speculation. …

Tax Ivy League endowments to pay for it.

How about 5% of endowments over $1 billion, each year?

I would love to see the Harvard progressives react to that.

Or their parents have to pay, to have their own kids taught to hate them and their own country. Kinda like having to pay for the bullets which were used to execute your own family.

The system used to provide most of the help to students who "study hard and do well." Socialism wants to reward the lazy and incompetent.

I did a quick calculation, it’s not even in the ballpark.

5% of the top 10 endowments is about $8 bil.

Burney’s plan requires $63 bil per year.

I do like your idea though.

Jr Colleges are already almost free.

Just a few hundred dollars a semester can get you into one here in Texas.

Just curious, how will he pay for his $77 billion plan the second year? Or $88 billion plan the third year? Or $114 billion plan the fourth year?

As soon as there’s absolutely no lid on income for the colleges and universities, you’ll see massive pay raises across the board (not to mention ‘living wages’ for undergrads...)

Thus concentrating influence into “public” universities, taking the funding thereof from the people most needing money for real education at private school, and further concentrating indoctrination while marginalizing independent thought. Just like public grade schools; I can send my kids to the local “free” indoctrination center, or pay painfully for the private alternatives while still having my income robbed for the other.

One way to make “free college” more affordable for taxpayers is cut the bloated professor and administrative salaries by 25 %

Let me GET THIS STRAIGHT. The ‘poor’ and middle-class will be relegated to SECOND RATE state institutions (in many states), while the RICH get to go to elite private schools.

THIS CANNOT STAND. A judge will quickly expand the entitlement of free tuition to ALL SCHOOLS, based on Title 9 or whatever it’s called.

So, if you go to school and study, we are going to pay for it.

“Sanders voters don’t *want* to go to college:”

They don’t want to “go,” they just want to be given diplomas so they can pretend they’re actually qualified for the jobs they won’t get. This will enable them to sue for discrimination.
