Donald Trump's lead in the Republican race is real, but far from secure. At the moment, the billionaire has 458 delegates and Ted Cruz has 359. That's a 99 delegate lead with more than 1,400 delegates still to be selected. Cruz has plenty of room to come from behind if he's able to defeat Trump in a head-to-head match-up.
While the headlines have been great for Trump over the past week, Cruz has actually held his own in the delegate race. Last Saturday, the two men each won a pair of states. But Cruz won his states big and ended up with more delegates. On Tuesday, Trump won three states out of four and grabbed more delegates than Cruz. But when you put the two days together, it's a toss-up. Cruz won 125 delegates, and Trump 124....

Me thinks Trump may have won Illinois after yesterday’s Chicago incident. Hopefully this election hasn’t evolved into a race war, YET.
99 delegate lead on the wall,
99 delegate lead...
If one of those delegates should happen to fall,
98 delegate lead on the wall,
98 delegate lead...
Scott, your article is old news. Please update it with the Chicago events and the candidates’ reactions to them. Trump will not have any issues getting enough delegates now.
Cruz caught up by one delegate. So long as Rubio and Kasich stay , that is likely to be representative of what we will see. If it becomes a real two man race, then we’ll see. I don’t know which would win, but I’d like to find out.
“Cruz has plenty of room to come from behind....”
Yeah, except for stepping on his whatchamacallit in his gloating presser during the riot, when he condemned Trump rather than the rioters. Sounded just like Obama.
Sorry Scott, Ted just handed him the nomination last night.
I can’t believe the election results of the 2 for 2 split are being dragged out.
The Trump rally stopped yesterday just won Trump the election.
Let’s see if they show up at a Cruz tally.
And Cruz is discusting, he blamed Trump for the protests.
Cruz can come from behind with Marco FoamBoy Rubio.
Cruz has plenty of room to come from behind ...
He's going to have even more room to come from behind after Tuesday.
I think we now know “what the Bush meeting” was about.
I guess by now 2nd you’ve seen that Cruz did blame Trump for the protests. Seems we now know what Bush laid out when he met with the 3 stogges on debate day.
That could have been worded much, much better.
Hilarity ensues.
Liar Goldman Cruz was very fast to blame the victims,
as is his stinking, dirty-trick way.
Cruz (Liar, Goldman Sacs) is the NEW Obama.
Not for want of press instigation. That's for sure.
If I didn't believe in a coordinated media before this, certainly do now.
Blaming Trump for Chicago is like blaming Rite-Aid for Baltimore.
I agree with Cruz’ assessment last night: if you run an “in your face campaign”, eventually you’ll encourage someone to step up in your face. To suggest that Trump is some innocent bystander here is silly.
I think last night serves to do what Trump does best: rivet media attention and take the news cycle. That’s been to his advantage for months. It will be now.
I do not believe that there is a large cache of voters that will now bolt to Trump over this confrontation. Those votes were his already. Look at FreeRepublic. All the posters patting themselves on the back about what a landslide last night will be for Trump tend to already be his loudest supporters anyway. It’s an echo chamber.
There’s a larger segment of the Republican electorate that is and will get tired of the antics very quickly. And. We’ve not seen the last of the antics. The people last night that got attention will seek to get it again and again. Welcome to the reality TV campaign.
If it wasn’t for Cruz winning his state it would be even further than the large gap now. And, he won it by the lowest voting for home state nominee in over a 100 years.
His betrayal yesterday and his constant lying will most likely cost him going forward. Americans are waking up to the fact that he is a dishonorable man. And the cult he belongs to is not Christian as we Christians believe. Ted is not the annoited one to bring in the Tribulation as his father says...
My Florida vote just went from Cruz to Trump.
Screw you, Ted Cruz.
Yeah, Cruz calling out Trump for his obvious and documented encouragement of violence was bad form, sort of like pointing out somebody’s hare lip.
But, that doesn’t mean it’s any the less true.
We’ll have to wait and see how it plays out with the 60 plus percent of primary voters who are not already Trumpnotized.
Ted just ended his campaign.
