Donald Trump’s appeal is said to be his straight talk. But when it comes to international trade, he sounds like a hypocrite, the classic “Do what I say, not what I do” politician.
While bashing companies for investing in foreign countries, Donald Trump’s own company has shown no inclination to invest and build only in America. In fact, a significant percentage of his company’s hotels and major real estate properties are located abroad. “Mr. Trump is either inexcusably hypocritical or inexcusably ignorant of economics,” according to Donald J. Boudreaux, a professor of economics at George Mason University. “There is zero economic difference between, say, a U.S. car company’s investments abroad in factories and Mr. Trump’s own investments abroad in hotels: both are meant to improve the bottom line of companies headquartered in the U.S. by taking advantage of profitable economic opportunities outside of the U.S.”

So what.
I get the distinct impression many people in this discussion object to any kind of association between overseas investment and overseas manufacturing —the latter involving outsourcing (while an argument could be made there is a procurement aspect to hotel construction which could well fall under “overseas outsourcing.” But that’s for another day) I guess the major question I have here on FR today with Trump business practice defenders is if they object not (so much) to cross-border hotel development but they do look negatively upon actual manufacturing factory or other design chain segments being sent out if the USA into foreign markets for a net loss of US jobs there. Correct? Could someone engage me and indicate if my understanding is correct on that point? Would you or one of the Trump followers speak to this point?
So sad when a good mind goes to waste.

We went to two authoritative databases of campaign finance data to examine Ferguson’s numbers: OpenSecrets.org, to find federal donations, and FollowtheMoney.org, for state-level donations.
Trump has actually been relatively evenhanded in doling out cash to the two parties, but since 1989, he’s contributed over $350,000 more to Republicans running for federal and state offices, campaign finance records show.
Data from the Federal Election Commission and state elections offices provided by the two websites show that Trump has given $584,850 to Democrats and $961,140 to the GOP over the last 26 years.
The difference in donations is almost entirely captured in Trump’s recent giving. Since 2012, Trump has donated $463,450 to Republicans and just $3,500 to Democrats (California Attorney General Kamala Harris and New York Assemblyman Michael Benedetto).
He has not denied it. He has said the rules make it necessary to do this, let’s change the rules and bring business home.
Here is a more valid analogy: Trump has mentioned making companies like Ford who Hace manufacturing in Mexico pay a price. How is that different from him having manufacturing for his clothing lines in China and Mexico?

So in the process of that international business, what are your feelings of an American based business which engaged in outsourcing in cheaper labor markets like Asia, or in contract manufacturing, and it would have provided jobs in Asia which would otherwise would be in USA. What X bout that....Thoughts?
All the other hotels are built by the people whose names are on them. The Hilton Brothers are especially hard workers.
The man/woman who decides to build the building, arrange for the design & the funding, the supervision and the planning gets the credit. Admittedly he couldn't do it without the mason, the sheetrock guy etc but no way could they build it without him. Lots of sheetrock guys few guys with the vision, financial muscle, attention to detail and tenacity to build the buildings Trump has completed.
