Sorry Mitt Romney–
On FOX News Sunday this morning Rush Limbaugh pointed out that even with a brokered convention the Republican nominees must have won a majority of delegates in at least 8 states.
So far only one candidate qualifies with 12 state victories – Donald Trump.
So even if the GOP establishment wants to nominate a Paul Ryan or Mitt Romney they couldn’t because they have not won majority of delegates in any state let alone 8 states.
This convention rule – Number 40 – was adopted at the 2012 convention.
Rush said the GOP would have to change the convention rules in order to steal the election from the Republican base.

Here is Rule Number 40 from the Republican National Committee:
RULE NO. 40
Nominations
(a) In making the nominations for President of the United States and Vice President of the United States and voting thereon, the roll of the states shall be called separately in each case; provided, however, that if there is only one candidate for nomination for Vice President of the United States who has demonstrated the support required by paragraph (b) of this rule, a motion to nominate for such office by acclamation shall be in order and no calling of the roll with respect to such office shall be required.
(b) Each candidate for nomination for President of the United States and Vice President of the United States shall demonstrate the support of a 40 of 42 majority of the delegates from each of eight (8) or more states, severally, prior to the presentation of the name of that candidate for nomination. Notwithstanding any other provisions of these rules or any rule of the House of Representatives, to demonstrate the support required of this paragraph a certificate evidencing the affirmative written support of the required number of permanently seated delegates from each of the eight (8) or more states shall have been submitted to the secretary of the convention not later than one (1) hour prior to the placing of the names of candidates for nomination pursuant to this rule and the established order of business.
(c) The total time of the nominating speech and seconding speeches for any candidate for nomination for President of the United States or Vice President of the United States shall not exceed fifteen (15) minutes.
(d) When at the close of a roll call any candidate for nomination for President of the United States or Vice President of the United States has received a majority of the votes entitled to be cast in the convention, the chairman of the convention shall announce the votes for each candidate whose name was presented in accordance with the provisions of paragraph (b) of this rule. before the convention adjourns sine die, the chairman of the convention shall declare the candidate nominated by the Republican Party for President of the United States and Vice President of the United States.
(e) If no candidate shall have received such majority, the chairman of the convention shall direct the roll of the states be called again and shall repeat the calling of the roll until a candidate shall have received a majority of the votes entitled to be cast in the convention.
The problem is the RNC can change the rules any time they want.
My understanding that the “rules” can be changed virtually at any time up until the day before the convention.
So they will change the rules
Walk softly, as there is nothing to prevent the GOP from changing the rules before the convention. They’ve done it before.
This is POORLY written. Trump has 12 victories, but does NOT have the majority of delegates in 12 states. Rule 40 CAN be changed at any time. If Trump has a majority, there is no stopping him. If he is CLOSE to a majority, he may be able to deal for some Cruz delegates.
... Can and WILL change the rules any time they want.
That’s only on the first vote. By definition, a brokered convention is one where no one has a majority of delegates.
Those rules are subject to change. And they will be changed before the convention
Indeed that IS the problem.
Of course, they are between the proverbial rock and hard place on this one. The only issue is ... do they want to get slaughtered with Trump or slaughtered with Mittens or some other twit-brain.
Yes, you are right, Trump technically has 5 qualifying states
And I believe Cruz has three states as well
Rule 40 will be revised in April, just watch.
They can change the rules, but they’d have at least 1,000 very p’d off delegates who will be very mad, and very vocal.
WELL THEN THE PRIMARIES AND ELECTION IS A COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME.
sINCE it does not matter who is running, because the Establishment/Globalist are going to put in whoever they want.
Don’t bother with the numbers. they don’t matter.
We all know that the leadership can just change the rules, whenever they want.
The fix is in folks. Pretty sure nothing will come of it though. We’re all too comfortable in our daily lives to do anything more than angrily type out
our feelings.
Rules are for the little people. Does the author really think they apply to people like Romney or Ryan? If the rules need to be “amended”....they will be “amended”.
The GOP is beyond corrupt.
The LA GOP did last minute rule changes, in direct violation, all to shut down Ron Paul supporters in 2012. Like hate Paul, wrong is wrong.
Like Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ Rules, the 40s are only used to protect the women and children. Unlike Gibbs’ Rules, the RNC Rules change to fit the mean and ends in the moment.
Mitt Romney won more than 8 states already...in 2012. /Hopefully sarcasm
