Jim Svejda is not a fan of Nikolaus Harnoncourt. In fact, he has referred to him as an “incompetent bozo” - among other things.

Jim Svejda has always struck me as an elitist.

Sadly, the concept of historically authentic performance doesn't seem to have caught on like I had hoped it would. A couple of years ago I saw in the program schedule for the local NPR <airquotes>classical</airquotes> station that it was going to be playing my favorite of Bach's trio sonatas. It turned out to be an easy listening version for massed strings. It was so bad I deleted the preset for the station and haven't tuned it in since.

Ah, that’s a shame. I was just listening to his ‘Four Seasons’ CD this morning. Fantastic rendition.

Here is Anna Netrebko's tribute:
Very saddened to learn of the passing of Maestro Nikolaus Harnoncourt. I loved him and had an incredible experience working with him on Mozart. He will be greatly missed.Photo: © Monika Rittershaus / DGPosted by Anna Netrebko on Sunday, March 6, 2016

Thank you for posting this. I had the great privilege of performing (in the chorus) under Maestro Harnoncourt when he conducted Bach’s St Matthew Passion at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in 1972. It was an unforgettable experience, as fresh in memory as if it had been last year, not over 40 years ago.

How does that make his analysis any less valuable? Whatever it means to begin with.

When it comes to his to his interpretation of Harnoncourt’s abilities, I think it detracts from his overall analytical acumen.
RIP NH.

In what sense? That Harnoncourt is a conductor for the ‘common man’? As opposed to the effete conductors that Svjeda prefers? The argument is a non-sequitur.
