Legal marijuana is finally doing what the drug war couldn’t
Washington Post ^ | March 03, 2016 | Christopher Ingraham

Legal marijuana may be doing at least one thing that a decades-long drug war couldn't: taking a bite out of Mexican drug cartels' profits.

The latest data from the U.S. Border Patrol shows that last year, marijuana seizures along the southwest border tumbled to their lowest level in at least a decade. Agents snagged roughly 1.5 million pounds of marijuana at the border, down from a peak of nearly 4 million pounds in 2009.

The data supports the many stories about the difficulties marijuana growers in Mexico face in light of increased competition from the north. As domestic marijuana production has ramped up in places such as California, Colorado and Washington, marijuana prices have fallen, especially at the bulk level.

“Evidence? They’re both popular mind-altering substances that were once illegal then became (at least in some states) legalized.”

Evidence? You need evidence about the savagery of cartels? You are one sick pup. This isn’t that, son. Don’t think it is.

And you think Al Capone and his peers were nice guys?

Your link doesn't say they’re purchasing illegally grown pot and selling it through legal retail shops.

Nor does your latest cut and paste.

In other words: legal pot is cutting into illegal profit margins, and lightly taxed and regulated will do so even more.

And your latest cut and paste agrees with this too:

he grew disillusioned following what he saw as excessive regulation, uncertainty and taxation.

“And you think Al Capone and his peers were nice guys?”

No. No I don’t. But even if you are stoned, consider this; how many “guys” did Al Capone and ALL his rivals have? What kind of technology did they have?

Like I said, that is not this.

There are more soldiers in the cartels that make up their corporate structures than we have in our standing army. And they are VERY well armed. And it will take them a while to do it, but soon they will be coming for you. And they will not be afraid of our liberal police with their hands tied. Scenes like the one below are nothing. That’s a peaceful Sunday morning in a lot of their towns.

Good luck.

Lightly taxed and regulated? Bwahahahaha. What are you, 12? Lightly taxed and regulated is what it is now. You left out the parts of the article that observe that it’s going to get worse, not better.

You must like pot a REAL LOT.

As usual, your link doesn't support your claim.

Lightly taxed and regulated is what it is now.

You should read your own links some time:

"hefty new state and local marijuana taxes that in Denver equal nearly a nearly 29 percent tax rate on all pot sales"

"Brandon has also faced sky-high regulatory costs; between applying for his recreational marijuana sales license so he can sell retail pot this spring and upgrading his existing medical marijuana sales license to accommodate the growing number of patients registered with his dispensary, he estimates he’s been shelling out $15,000 to $20,000 over each of the past four months on city and state applications, licensing, inspection, and permit fees. There are other new costs associated with recreational sales, such as purchasing opaque, childproof shopping bags to accommodate the state’s new marijuana packaging rules. Brandon has also been hemorrhaging money in the form of legal and accounting fees to comply with an aggressive, multiyear federal audit of his business, one of the first of many Internal Revenue Service actions he predicts will soon be plaguing Colorado’s marijuana industry."

"Under Section 280E of the Internal Revenue Code, those violating the Controlled Substances Act—whether they’re common street dealers or vertically integrated, state-regulated marijuana businesses—are required to pay taxes on the proceeds of all their transactions, but without the benefit of deducting most normal business expenses. Unlike other illegal businesses—prostitution, gambling, or even murder for hire—only drug dealers are singled out for this special tax treatment. (Whereas a hit man who gets busted and forced to pay taxes on his blood money can deduct the cost of his sniper rifle, travel expense to and from the crime scene, etc.)"

the parts of the article that observe that it’s going to get worse, not better.

There are no such parts. Consider a remedial reading course.

DENVER — It turns out selling weed is pretty hard.

Yeah, they only managed to sell a billion dollars worth in 2015, a 40% increase over 2014=>

According to the data, marijuana shops sold $996 million of pot in 2015, an increase of about $300 million from the previous year. Totals for taxes and license fees also grew by about $59 million in the same time period.

Don’t be a dummy. Yes, the cartels are growing in the Sierra Foothills, but no they are not selling that pot legally. There is of course still a healthy (but declining thankfully) black market for pot in California and elsewhere, but there is also a healthy (and growing thankfully) market for legal pot. The illegal cartel grown pot is not attractive to the legal buyer; would be like trying to sell the fermented corn syrup that they try to label as “Tequila” to people who are used to drinking top shelf.

For the record, I don’t smoke pot. But I do have friends who are involved in the business of it (legally and not), so I’m pretty conversant in what’s happening. You can think of it as a continuum with pot grown legally in the U.S. on one extreme and pot grown south of the border on the other, with illegal growing in the U.S. in the middle. There’s overlap between pot grown legally and illegally in the U.S. and there’s overlap between pot grown illegally in the U.S. and illegally south of the border, but there’s no overlap between pot grown legally in the U.S. and pot grown illegally south of the border.
