To the catalogue of anxieties her patients explore during therapy marriage, children, and careers psychologist Alison Howard is now listening to a new source of stress: the political rise of Donald Trump.
In recent days, at least two patients have invoked the Republican front-runner, including one who talked at length about being disturbed that Trump can be so divisive and popular at the same time, said Howard, who practices in the District.
What had happened to Trump during his childhood, the patient wanted to know, to make him such a bad person?
He has stirred people up, Howard said. Weve been told our whole lives not to say bad things about people, to not be bullies, to not ostracize people based on their skin color. We have these social mores and he breaks all of them and hes successful. And people are wondering how he gets away with it.
Hand-wringing over Trumps rapid climb, once confined to Washingtons political establishment, is now palpable among everyday Americans who are growing ever more anxious over the prospect of the billionaire reaching the White House.

“This comes from the same kind of people who cant hear a different opinion on campus with talking about micro aggression and needing safe spaces. Is America that emasculated?”
Yep. There are plenty here on FR who shoot out the term “attack” when barely a challenge or criticism is being offered. Sensitive little cupcakes.
To quote Michael Savage, Liberalism is a mental disorder.
From their perspective, it seems to go so well, eight years of their diversity appointment to office, permission to police the speech and activities of others in the name of the oppressed ...
And here comes a guy who won’t give the black lives matter protesters the stage like Sanders and Clinton did. He doesn’t cave when called racist or sexist, don’t submit to a subordinate position when they name call, and instead stands up with followers for freedom of speech, freedom of belief, freedom of association.
And to an authoritarian, serfs who won’t submit are dangerous, and the man who leads them is evil.
They are calling it an epidemic of electile dysfunction!
Now that’s funny right there...
Oh great. More reason for people to get on meds and then go kill their children or shoot up their workplace.
Amen. I nearly sprayed my coffee on the monitor at "What had happened to Trump during his childhood, the patient wanted to know, to make him such a 'bad person?' " (Mommy, make the bad man go away!)
You are so right...My dad was there a little after June 6, 1944...He was with Patton’s 3rd Army....
So the GOPe are seeing their shrinks. Hahahaha
Ha! Ha! Ha!...All the liberals want to drive over the cliff?
Good grief! Do only liberals go to shrinks? I would not be surprised if it is true.
I have had a lot of anxiety over the past 7 years. Between having to look at Obama and his ineptitude and his love of Muslims; couple that with Madame Secretary Clinton and her reset button and ‘what difference does it make’ and her carelessness with national security - - - that makes for SUPER ANXIETY. Yet I have never gone to a shrink for therapy.
Instead I and my prayer group pray every week that God will save our republic and will keep us the land of the free. So my hope is in the Lord. And who am I to judge if the Lord is sending us Donald Trump? It is not my first choice to be sure, but then God does amazing things with flawed people. Look at how he raised David from a shepherd to the King of Israel?
I really enjoyed the semi-veiled call of racism in the article, too.
The left (and GOPe, but I repeat myself) are terrified.
I guess she only takes liberals as clients, or she might realize that this is not a brand new phenomenon. It probably happens to some degree every election cycle.
But then, most conservatives probably don't run to a shrink when reality creeps into our "safe space", so if she didn't notice us, it's probably our fault..
Love it.
