St. Jude cited racial concerns in asking Decatur County to change the name of its annual hunt.
For the past 40 years, Decatur County has hosted a hunting event to raise money for the patients at St. Jude Childrens Hospital. So far, it has raised $4.5 million.
Decatur County Mayor Mike Creasy said the hospital is now threatening to turn down the donations unless the county changes the name of the event.
For decades, the event has been known as the Decatur County Worlds Largest Coon Hunt.
The Coon Hunt Board told Channel 4 that St. Jude has threatened to disassociate with the event and not accept donations unless Decatur County changes the name to raccoon hunt, citing racial concerns.
Very disappointed, Creasy said. It diminishes our desire to even think of moving forward with St. Jude.
Creasy and the board agreed to change the events name, but St. Jude again asked the county to change the name to raccoon festival, citing animal rights concerns.
Its not a festival and it will never be a festival, Creasy said. Its a raccoon hunt and its what its going to remain.
St. Jude officials told Channel 4 they never refused donations from the event or the event organizers.
A St. Jude spokesperson issued the following statement:
It is our standard practice to accept donations from a variety of events and people of all walks of life, professions and backgrounds who desire to help support our mission and we will continue to do so. The event committee voted 100 percent to change the name and we support their decision and appreciate the continued desire of the community to help in our work in finding cures and saving children.
We didnt do this for the board of directors. We didnt do it for anyone thats arguing their point. Its for the kids, and thats the reason we wanted to continue our relationship with St. Jude, Creasy said.
The mayor said the city plans to change all of its signs to now say raccoon. However, the group behind the event is a registered LLC. With six weeks to go before the event, Creasy said they dont have time to legally change the name.

Can’t wait for ‘white’ elephant gifts to be banned.
we are getting to see the country go insane and it all feels like slow motion.
that has to reverse course.
No kidding
The term coon is old school
Archaic
Most folks don’t associate it with negroes anymore
I can only imagine St Jude’s is now influenced by where it sits more than ever
It’s walled and gated like a fortification
I wonder why they never moved out to Germantown or Collierville
Or Nashville which is also centrally located
If I were the coon hunters I’d just ask someone else
Pity
Decator should give the money to another worthy group, screw St. Jude.
Screw St Jude
The word coon is a corruption of raccoon that has become a colloquialism referring to a specific species of animals. It appears that someone at St. Jude's is seeing racism where it doesn't exist.
Must have found out that the 'hunt' was going to use firearms. And they know the only reason someone would buy a firearm would be to shoot up a school. So hunting needs to be banned at the former coon hunt.
At this point, I'd find some other group that was willing to take my donation.
Right, I’m sure muslims are offended by the name St. Jude, they should change it to Allah at the Bar
It’s funny but just when you think some archaic (and in this case ridiculous) racial slur is about to pass from our collective memory, the Left miraculously resurrects it . . . for a noble cause, of course.
Shriners...my first thought. Great suggestion.
That’s exactly what I would do. This is absurd. They are going to turn down millions because someone, somewhere MIGHT be offended. Move to Shriners and be done with it.
If they want to ban racially sensitive terminology like "coon", I want the libs to stop using the word "slave". We haven't had slaves since the middle of the 1860s, it's an obsolete term that I find "offensive", so stop throwing up in everybody's faces.
I wonder how shoe stores are going to deal with advertising black loafers. Isn’t that offensive to unemployed African-Americans?
I’m very disappointed. This is one of the charities that we donate to yearly.
When I saw the headline, I assumed it the hospital was concerned about the term “coon” being taken as deriogatory slang for black people. It never occurred to me that it had to do with PETA types. How do you have a “festival” celebrating that which is hunted? Does Florida have snake festivals every year?
But after the liberal meltdown over Cecil the Lion, isn’t hunting itself verboten to the liberals, regardless of what name they give this event???
One time, I said something about black coffee. And this teenage friend of my son, being the teenage smart aleck, said it was racist to talk about black coffee.
So I asked him, what am I supposed to say, African-American coffee??? He didn’t respond. But shows how there is such nonsense pumped into the heads of young people today.
Changed to Raccoon? That term is very offensive to roundheeled girls who wear too much eye makeup. War On Women!
Undoubtedly Marlo’s dictum.
Well....in the workplace I heard a co-worker admonishing someone to: “Don’t ask for black coffee, ask for coffee plain.”
Oh, well.
