See link to Sept. 1980 article, from Google Newspaper archived material. The "Klan" smear against Republicans isn't anything new. Reagan had to endure it, just like Trump now.

And Ted Cruz
And I remember the liberals gave Reagan grief for making a campaign stop in Philadelphia, Mississippi, which apparently was a hometown of the Klan?? And per liberal criteria a place to avoid otherwise you are endorsing the Klan.
Everything being said about Trump was said about Reagan.
Look back in 76 and 80.
Turn it around on Hilary. Use her attacks on the police and her support of BLM.
Speaking from the grave, Senator Robert Byrd says “just leave it the hell enough alone!”
“Regan was a KKK sympathizer, though.”
-Glenn Beck
-Ted Cruz
-Marco Rubio
When the Left can’t run on issues, they resort to name-calling.
SOP.
Yeah, I was gonna say, I guess Robert Byrd never existed. IIRC, algore has some Klan in his clan does he not??
Their playbook is stale.
Demographics are different this time than in 1980 so we’ll see how this plays out
Trump can kill this entire “tactic” with a simple response:
“I am having difficulty finding where the Republican party ever elected and installed into the US Senate a Grand Kleagel of the KKK.
Next question.”
I saw where Romney denounced Trump for “coddling” “repugnant bigotry”.
So Romney is channeling Carter’s campaign against Reagan in 1980 - and his own father’s treatment of Goldwater in 1964.
Romney is one of those guys who is clearly very bright given his academic pedigree and accomplishments, but if you didn’t know about those things, and just heard him speak or read his words, you’d think he was on the dim side. He struck me in 2012 as a pleasant, dim-witted guy. Now, he’s no longer pleasant.
Mr. Trump needs to remind everybody loud and often that the Klan was a creation and subsidiary of the DEMOCRAT PARTY!
“Trump can kill this entire tactic with a simple response:”
I’ll go you one better. He should say: “I’m going to make America great for everybody, regardless of race. In fact, blacks and hispanics are hurt the most by the open-border, cheap labor policies that I’ll put a stop to.
The difference is this time it is REPUBLICANS playing the race card...Cruz/Rubio camps.
“The difference is this time it is REPUBLICANS playing the race card” And don’t forget Romney.
In that sense, it’s more like 1964, and the GOP establishment’s smears against Goldwater.
If the Dems want to make the KKK an issue, then they had best go back and look at all of their candidates who never spoke out against Robert Byrd, a leading democratic Senator for decades who had been a member of the KKK.
They never did.
This is just more of the expected, every major election, race baiting and accusations that the Dems always use as fear mongering.
“Really sad,” Cruz wrote on Twitter.
Cruz further told Trump that “you’re better than this. We should all agree, racism is wrong, KKK is abhorrent.”
Rubio later wrote: “We cannot be a party that nominates someone who refuses to condemn white supremacists and the Ku Klux Klan.”
“If the Dems want to make the KKK an issue”
Fine, but what about Romney making it an issue?

Then magic circus, the media concocts this KKK story and won't take no for an answer. It is so obvious. Below are some links of how they did it to Chris McDaniel.
