Road Trip: NAS Whiting Field, Florida

Naval Air Station Whiting Field is a United States Navy base located near Milton, Florida, in central Santa Rosa County, and is one of the Navy's two primary pilot training bases (the other being NAS Corpus Christi, Texas).

NAS Whiting Field also provides training for U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force student pilots, as well as those of several allied nations. NAS Whiting Field is home to Training Air Wing FIVE (TRAWING 5).

NAS Whiting Field is actually two airfields sharing a common support base. Primary Flight Training student aviators fly the Beechcraft T-6 Texan II from North Whiting Field (KNSE) while Advanced Helicopter Training takes place utilizing the TH-57 Sea Ranger at South Whiting Field (KNDZ).

Whiting Field is named for Kenneth Whiting, who was commissioned from the United States Naval Academy on 25 February 1908. Whiting qualified in submarines, commanding USS Porpoise (SS-7), USS Shark (SS-8), USS Tarpon (SS-175), and USS Seal (SS-183). In 1914 he learned to fly under Orville Wright and was designated Naval Aviator number 16.

North Field is used solely for T-6 Texan II fixed-wing, primary flight training operations. Students from the United States Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force (as well as exchange students from various allied nations) go through the T-6B Joint Primary Aircraft Training System syllabus.

South Field is utilized for United States Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard students in the Advanced Helicopter pipeline, flying the TH-57 Sea Ranger. Upon completion of this syllabus students will become designated Naval Aviators and assigned to their respective Fleet Replacement Squadron.

Naval Air Station Whiting Field is completed its transition from the T-34 to the new T-6B in April 2012. The installation currently hosts 6 Training Squadrons and 2 Instructor Squadrons, which is comprised of 141 T-6Bs and about 120 TH-57s.

The installation is composed of two separate primary airfields and uses 13 Outlying Landing Fields to support both primary and intermediate flight training. Naval Air Station Whiting Field is the busiest air station in the world, accounting for nearly 1.5 million annual flight operations including primary flight training of over 1,200 students.

Get one of those (I hate them, but they last a long time) Chinese low watt florescent light bulbs and put it near where the kittens sleep. Coyotes will stay away.

The problem is the cats don’t stick around at night. They wander around the farm, hunting. If they stayed close to the house, it wouldn’t be a problem.

So now we bring them inside at dusk, which is when the coyotes head out of their dens. There are a couple of packs in the area and our farm is part of their territory.

No lamp...they told us the lights would blink at 6:45p and go off at 7p. For the next few months it won’t much matter, as the days are getting longer and longer. As fall progresses I will have to think about a lamp.

One of the safety guys came in today and expressed his dissatisfaction of the cramped quarters. I got the impression there may be some rethinking after things settle down. At least I got all my boxes and chair. One of the girls has still to find her chair.

Does the whole mall shut down at 7:00 or do they just shut off the lights in the office spaces?
At least you do have the longer days coming up so that will help.

Did the windows give too much glare or are they going to be ok after all?

Good for the safety guy being concerned. With everything and everyone being so crammed in like y’all are, I can see where it would be dangerous if you needed to get out in a hurry. There SHOULD be some rethinking about it.

Good evening/morning, Mac...*HUGS*..first day in the new offices. Most of the day was spent unpacking and trying to find places for things you think you need, but there is no longer any space available.

4 of us in one small room and 4 needing to use the phone to talk to employees...an interesting day. None of us is happy.

Hope your work days are going well and the basement is finally getting some fresh air.

It looks like just the office spaces.

All offices in the “tower” are surrounding the skating rink.

The lower level is the food court and Arbys and Subway, and a small bowling alley. The lobby floor has a post office and the freight elevator just outside their door. Up the elevator and half a dozen steps into the payroll area. The other shops seem to be regular mall stores. Then 2nd floor thru 6th seems to be all offices. I suspect all the office lights go off at the same time. We do have a number to call to ask that, maybe just ours, the lights stay on. In the winter we may have to resort to a little lamp.

From the lobby floor you can walk thru to the “mall” and all the usual “mall” stuff. I think it might be open til 10p.

Our window faces north, and we do have blinds. Only time will tell.

I just think it stinks they turn off the lights when not all businesses renting space have the same hours. It would be nice if you could turn your own lights on and off as needed.
But it does sound like you’ll need to get something small for your desk since that isn’t the case. At least there’s a large selection to choose from these days and they aren’t expensive.

Good. You do have blinds. They didn’t show in the pic last night and I didn’t know if you were going to have to get them yourselves.

A couple more stacking trays, which I have, and hopefully I will be functional.

And I kept my space...and it’s even smaller than I thought. LOL! And there are no magnetic surfaces for magnets to hold papers I looked at every day. This is going to take a bit to get settled in and really functioning.

It did look mighty small in the pic last night. But it didn’t look like it was the smallest. You have the whole corner, right? Is there any spot to put something that will hold magnets? Something you can set up against the wall that you can use magnetic clips to hold your papers?

This is worse than moving to a new house, isn’t it? LOL! Moving stinks.

I’ll try to remember to get another pic tomorrow. The other two have the same size flat space on either side of the center piece. And the front to back depth is much less than what we had.
