Nearly 20,000 Bay State Democrats have fled the party this winter, with thousands doing so to join the Republican ranks, according to the state's top elections official.
Secretary of State William Galvin said more than 16,300 Democrats have shed their party affiliation and become independent voters since Jan. 1, while nearly 3,500 more shifted to the MassGOP ahead of tomorrow's "Super Tuesday" presidential primary.
Galvin called both "significant" changes that dwarf similar shifts ahead of other primary votes, including in 2000, when some Democrats flocked from the party in order to cast a vote for Sen. John McCain in the GOP primary.
The primary reason? Galvin said his "guess" is simple: "The Trump phenomenon," a reference to GOP frontrunner Donald Trump, who polls show enjoying a massive lead over rivals Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and others among Massachusetts Republican voters.

I just have a feeling, it’s going to Yuge!
Mr. niteowl77
That is what I was worried about.
Trump will turn this ship around.
I just hung up on him.
The Ted Cruz wave...
Where's the fun in that? Everybody's having such a good time dancing around the bonfires of bridges they'll never need again.
brows squinched. That’s a lot of in the know people, just deciding to leave party. at one time. For real ?
Conservatives?
You mean the compassionate conservatives who believe open borders is an ac of love? Those conservatives than want free trade so the middle class and working class lose their jobs to overseas workers? You mean thos conservatives who want more HB-1 visas to destroy our technology industries? You mean those conservatives who support big banks and big business and Wall Street? You mean those conservatives who will continue Bush’s policy disasters in the Middle East?
Trump has even turned MA into God fearing Republicans. Salvation has come ! Praise Ford !
Just because the tap is leaking one drip per minute, doesn’t mean a wave is going to happen anytime soon.

Like it or not, Mass is VERY WHITE...and those whites have been treated like Shiite by the Dems.
Sounds like they are COMING TO THEIR SENSES THERE...as they will in much of the Northeast and Midwest, now that they have TRUMP to vote for.
Aw shoot. You beat me to it. (the catching fire part).
I saw this earlier in The Herald. If MA were to go Trump in Nov., a Nixon 72/Reagan 84 type of landslide may occur.
Everyone I know is voting for The Donald, except 2 that said Bernie and 1 female friend of the GF said ¡Yeb!. Putz..
No one mentions Hillary! or the Havana Bois.
My Uncle’s Touretting over Trump and ordered some Trump stuff and got me a hat. I said thanks and put it in the trunk of my car. I have limits.
And just in case anyone wasn’t 1000000% sure, I’m voting for Trump.
Conservatives.
Constitutional, rule of law, small government, inherent right to life and liberty conservatives.
Not RINOs. Trump is the biggest RINO candidate in history.
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.

Hillary Clinton is killing the Democrat Party.
Attaway Hillary! You show them! Just sneer at them!
/Maybe they are doing this to give us Trump and then they will still vote for Hillary?/
I know of one /Mass-progressive/ with that in mind.
But that is just one, Rigkt?
There has seemed to be a quiet but powerful ‘seismic shift’ taking place, over the past few days.
Does anyone watch OAN? I noticed over the weekend that they started playing an ad for their channel that features a song called ‘Let’s Make America Great Again’. I hadn’t heard it before this weekend.
I don’t watch OAN a whole lot, but I’ve been watching for at least an hour a day for months, and never sensed any real ‘lean’ toward any particular Republican candidate. I recall listening to Ledger perhaps a month ago, when he actually seemed on that day to be quite anti-Trump.
Now they’re playing this song - no mention of Trump per se - but playing it frequently...
