Max Lucado is a pastor in San Antonio and a bestselling author of 32 books including the most recent Glory Days. In a 2004 piece, Christianity Today dubbed Max Lucado âAmericaâs Pastor,â alluding to his broad appeal to mainstream Americans. Part of that appeal can be attributed to his approach to politics: typically, he stays out of it. He never endorsed or opposed a presidential candidate. Then Trump happened.
In a recent blog post, Max Lucado chose to speak out against what he calls Trumpâs âantics,â insisting that, âsuch insensitivities wouldnât even be acceptable even for a middle school student body election.â
We talked to Lucado about his motivation for speaking up and how Trump has changed his attitude toward pastoral involvement in politics.
Prior to you publishing your post, âDecency for Presidentâ this week, how would you describe your typical approach to politics as a pastor?
I donât even put a candidateâs bumper sticker on my car. People donât attend church to hear my views on a presidential candidate.
I would have absolutely no right to speak up except that he repeatedly brandishes the Bible and calls himself a Christian.
In this case, itâs not so much a question about particular policies or strategies about government or even particular opinions. Itâs a case of public derision of people. Itâs belittling people publicly. It would be none of my business, I would have absolutely no right to speak up except that he repeatedly brandishes the Bible and calls himself a Christian.

He’s entitled to his opinion, just like the other 300 million of us.
LOL!!
Another Christian condemning Trump because they don’t think Trump is ‘Christian’ enough.
Muzzies are pleased.
Heâs entitled to his opinion, just like the other 300 million of us.
Everyone but me apparently?
There was a time when most FReepers would ridicule much of What Pat Robertson says, and applaud Max Lucado.
Why would any conservative vote for a candidate that is endorsed by both Christie a d Robertson?
Trump and Christie, two dishonest corrupt NE politicians.
Obama was claiming Christianity while working against its theology, morality, and other basic tenets for EIGHT YEARS.
Sure would be nice to have seen ol’ Max take a stand against such behaviour.
He never spoke up against Obama
...................................
Don’t need to go much further than that.
Why did’t he say anything when Obama claims to be Christian yet allows thousands of Christians to be murdered by ISIS? When not then and why now?
So you would trade New York for DC? Where the hell do you think the input end of the money pipeline opens up?
Romans 14:5 — let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
The Apostle is saying there are certain matters of conscience, even among Christians. All of us are supposed to be guided by the Spirit; but some of us discern that guidance differently from others.
He and others met w Clinton shortly after his election in 92. He also spoke at the 1999 natl prayer breakfast about divisiveness in politics. I dont suppose it makes him a Clinton supporter per se but I doubt he'll write an article about demanding the decency of a possible hillary white house.
A lot of churches now are nothing more than non-profit charities for the church leadership.
A lot of them fully support open borders and millions of illegals flooding into the country.
These churches get millions of dollars from the government to take care of these "refugees."
The ENTIRE system is corrupt. Government, churches, media, everything.
Trump is exposing it all.
Is a journalist any different then a Pastor who injects himself into politics? No, they both desire to shape peoples opinions. Which is ok, just understand what they are doing. Also, should anyone be impressed that he’s held back in past elections from getting involved, what weight is that supposed to carry, he doing it now and thats what matters.. Oh, remember the Pontiff.
Who’s to say he didn’t. Likely he did.
Just knew the RINO charge would come out just because one opposes Trump’s behavior.
Sorry, not gonna bite. It’s well documented that Trumpkins and Cruzers cannot engage in intellectual discourse.
That 501c3 Exempt status is what has muzzled the Influence of the Church in popular culture.
Well, I never was drawn to reading any of his books anyway...
Max Lucado is pastor at the Church in Laodicea.
Revelation 3
14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea, write this:
“’The Amen, the faithful and true witness, the source of God’s creation, says this:
15 “I know your works; I know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot.
16 So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.
17 For you say, ‘I am rich and affluent and have no need of anything,’ and yet do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
18 I advise you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich, and white garments to put on so that your shameful nakedness may not be exposed, and buy ointment to smear on your eyes so that you may see.
19 Those whom I love, I reprove and chastise. Be earnest, therefore, and repent.
20 “’”Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, [then] I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me.
21 I will give the victor the right to sit with me on my throne, as I myself first won the victory and sit with my Father on his throne.
22”’”Whoever has ears ought to hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”’”
* [3:14-22] The letter to Laodicea reprimands the community for being lukewarm (Rev 3:15-16), but no particular faults are singled out. Their material prosperity is contrasted with their spiritual poverty, the violet tunics that were the source of their wealth with the white robe of baptism, and their famous eye ointment with true spiritual perception (Rev 3:17-18). But Christ’s chastisement is inspired by love and a desire to be allowed to share the messianic banquet with his followers in the heavenly kingdom (Rev 3:19-21).
