A University of Texas dean said Thursday heâs leaving the school to pursue a different job in large part because of the new Texas law that will allow concealed firearms in public college classrooms.
Fritz Steiner, dean of the Texas School of Architecture, was named dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Design. He said he wouldnât have considered leaving if not for the new law, which takes effect prior to the start of the fall semester Aug. 1.
"I thought I would be responsible for enforcing a law I don't believe in," Steiner said.
Texas lawmakers voted in 2015 to force public colleges to allow concealed handgun license holders to bring their weapons into college buildings and classrooms, despite vigorous objections from higher education officials, faculty and students across the state. Supporters said the law was a critical self-defense measure and protection of constitutional rights.
Steiner said he's not anti-guns, but doesn't want them in the halls of higher education. Texas faculty have worried allowing guns could have a chilling effect on academic freedom and frank discussions in classrooms.
"I grew up hunting. My father was a Marine and a policeman. I'm not a stranger to firearms in any way," Steiner said. "I grew up believing there was an appropriate place for guns and it was not in a place of higher education and higher learning."

In looking him up, he has made his career doing green engineering schemes and environmental planning. What a wasted life.
Keep up the good work, UT. Maybe that liberal cesspool of higher learning will clean up.
Where are these “halls of higher education and learning” that he’s talking about?
Adios, mofo.

” “I grew up believing there was an appropriate place for guns and it was not in a place of higher education and higher learning.””
Tell that to the killers who come on your gun-free campus and murder.
The fact is...they DO NOT CARE about your laws and high ideals.
So, in the face of that reality, your students need to be armed if they so desire to protect themselves...and to help protect people like you.
If you cannot recognize that reality...then you belong back home.
Maybe he could get a job at Excel Industries in Ks. They’re a gun free zone, and probably have a few positions open now.
Good Riddance.
Hook ‘em!

Don’t let the door hit you in the A$$.
Goodbye good riddance.

They just don’t get it.
Steiner doesn’t desire protection from student carriers.
Texas is much better off without him. A person that does not want law abiding citizens to protect themselves positively abets violence and murder.
So, Dr. Steiner, since your father had guns in the house while you grew up, were ever afraid to have a frank discussion with him?
No problem. If you do not want your student to be safe then you really should not there anyhow!
Well sadly Mr Steiner it's a much different world now than the one we grew up in. Sudden Jihad syndrome occurs randomly and effectively in gun free zones.
Excellent. I’m all for anything that causes liberal scum to bodily remove themselves from my state of Texas.

As some would say, “logic is weak with this one.”
What would cause a potential killer from bringing a gun on campus:
A - A sign saying this was a gun free zone.
B - A sign saying concealed carry is okay
The potential gunman is now faced with the prospect someone will be armed and could kill him before he can go on a unopposed rampage.
Guess what, Fritz? Many colleges in PA already have campus carry. I haven’t heard of many bloodbaths or even accidental shootings there.

Excellent! I wish more liberal Yankees would vote with their feet and get the H... out of Texas.
Well said.
