Geneva, N.Y. - An Ontario County destination spot has reportedly added a charge line onto its food bills.
Belhurst Castle, located in Geneva, now displays a line in its receipt subtotals as a "NYS Labor Surcharge."
Tim Girvin knew the romantic meal with his Valentine would cost over $100. What he didn't expect was an extra fee.

Hey! What did he expect?
It’s New York....the place you pay for everything unexpected....like a pay toilet, pay for toilet paper, pay the man holding the towel and mandatory tips, taxes and all other parasitic drains on anything and everything.
Sometimes that will price you out of business, too.
Liberals have no conception of cause and effect when it comes to taxation. When they get slapped by one of the results, they shake their heads, but never figure out WHY this happened. If they did discover why by accident, they’d just deny it and blunder onwards.
Mr. Girvin, you're just "ignant."
WOW. So a lot to be taken away from this article.
First is the comments from NY scum outraged that businesses would have the temerity to pass government mandated expenses on to the customer. Not only are they ignorant but the entitlement is enraging.
Second, in NYC not only do the government pigs squeeze businesses with taxes and mandated wages but they make it illegal for a business to let a customer know how much that government action is costing the consumer.
Third, some NY pigs want the state to investigate this particular restaurant because they think it is misleading to call the added costs of operating in NYS a “NYS Labor Charge” when that line item does not go directly into state coffers.
Fourth the News organization reporting on all this doesn’t even have a clue that there is a side to this story besides the entitled shock of consumers finding out that they have to pay more to live in that hell hole.
Does anyone really believe that decent human beings can coexist with these people?
Obviously.
The people who voted to increase his costs need to help bear the costs. Customers, who typically tip based on the size of the bill, would of course have no moral obligation to tip for the surcharge, but just the actual cost of what they ordered.
So the $15 Minimum wage activists, or those left after the inevitable job reduction occurs, won't even be tipped on the full tab anymore. As it should be.
That should make the employees feel mucho disgruntled and add to the manager's grief, and encourage him to reduce employees along with their costs.
All they are doing is designing their pricing in such a way as to show you the result of the government’s overreach. They could have just dutifully built it into their pricing and said sorry, we had to raise prices, but why should they? I don’t have a bit of a problem with it.
btw this is a great restaurant in a beautiful location—definitely worth the stop if you are out that way.
I wish SOMEONE would do a detailed analysis of how a wage hike of 90% would affect the price of a McDonalds happy meal.
You have how many employees per restaurant? take their annual salary time 1.9. Figure in increases in overhead (janitors supplies, everything else would be more expensive, as well as electricity, etc.)
I am thinking it will be about ... 1.9.
So, a happy mean costs, what... about $4.50? so that goes to $8.55
for a family of 4 it goes from $13.50 to $25.65
I am thinking they are going to need another raise quick...
Girvin is not a smart man, is he.
It should have been listed as a State Government Stupidity surcharge.
I think employers should add a lines itemizing the cost to employ a person as hidden employment tax with the adjusted gross wage with the hidden tax.
He’s like wow they are passing it along.
Like totally dude.
Who do you think pays all of the taxes and assessments placed on businesses?,, ultimately the consumer pays in the form of higher prices.
I really wish they taught basic economics in school. So many people are ignorant of the basic concepts involved. Crazy that we can teach in school about LGBT matters and condoms but have no time to teach about how our economy works, how business works, what free enterprise is all about.........
I’ve had a bunch of these conversations with friends. It isn’t that they’re stupid, at least not very stupid, well, they’re liberals so check that, but it’s that they think of businesses as mysterious boxes that generate money by magic. The same guy who is amazed that businesses get all of their money from sales to customers has also never considered that the government gets all of its money from taxpayers. Who knew?
yup.
It’s probably a little more accurate to look at it this way:
1. Current cost of Happy Meal is $4.50
2. Cost of labor for that meal is 35%, or $1.58 of the total.
3. Let’s increase the hourly cost of labor from the current $10/hr. to a proposed $15/hr. (50% increase in labor).
4. The cost of labor for one Happy Meal increases by $.79 to $2.37.
5. Adding that .79 to the cost of the meal would raise the price to $5.29, or a 17.5% increase in the meal.
This is a very simplistic model and doesn’t account for the increase in payroll taxes, unemployment, and other tax liability increases the employer will face with an increase in wages.
The surcharge is the tip.
