As the father of three daughters, I reserved the right to interview their dates. Seemed only fair to me. After all, my wife and Iâd spent 16 or 17 years feeding them, dressing them, funding braces, and driving them to volleyball tournaments and piano recitals. A five-minute face-to-face with the guy was a fair expectation. I was entrusting the love of my life to him. For the next few hours, she would be dependent upon his ability to drive a car, avoid the bad crowds, and stay sober. I wanted to know if he could do it. I wanted to know if he was decent.
This was my word: âdecent.â Did he behave in a decent manner? Would he treat my daughter with kindness and respect? Could he be trusted to bring her home on time? In his language, actions, and decisions, would he be a decent guy?
Decency mattered to me as a dad.
Decency matters to you. We take note of the person who pays their debts. We appreciate the physician who takes time to listen. When the husband honors his wedding vows, when the teacher makes time for the struggling student, when the employee refuses to gossip about her co-worker, when the losing team congratulates the winning team, we can characterize their behavior with the word decent.
We appreciate decency. We applaud decency. We teach decency. We seek to develop decency. Decency matters, right?
Then why isnât decency doing better in the presidential race?
The leading candidate to be the next leader of the free world would not pass my decency interview. Iâd send him away. Iâd tell my daughter to stay home. I wouldnât entrust her to his care.
No, Mrs. Clinton doesn't pass my decency standard either. Trump should tone it down also but never, ever apologize for telling the truth.
“If you want decency in a President, you’ll need to instill decency in the country first.”
That ship sailed when we kicked God out of school.
“Politicians” tend not to be ‘decent’ people by my standards & it’s not just the way they behave in public. The big problem we’ve had in years past is that Republicans put on the white gloves, grab their pearls & head for the fainting couch every time a Democrat gives them the least little bit of trouble. Thus, Obama has run rampant for the last 7 years & the Dems have had their way for more than that.
I am not looking for a date for my kids. I am looking for someone big, bold and with the courage to take on the nastiest pieces of work in government & a government that has been usurped by marxists, socialists & the Muslim Brotherhood. A kinder, gentler sort of president will accomplish nothing. The Democrats take no prisoners. There have been plenty of ‘gentlemen’ who have run the country off the rails .... let’s see what a ‘construction worker’ type can do, one that speaks plainly (if a bit rough) & does what needs to be done, even if he bloodies some patrician noses.
That being said, Donald Trump raised what appears to be three very decent, productive, successful kids who have kids of their own (& I suspect the two younger kids will turn out equally as well). They obviously love and respect their father. That says volumes to me about the ‘decency’ of DJT.
Maybe you're a teenage boy who's outraged at the idea of someone getting in the way of his fornicatory privilege. The 18-year-old in me sympathizes. The father of teenage daughters chuckles.
Look at whom you are responding. That’s actually a DECENT response for the humblegunner.
I won’t be reading any more Max Lucado books in future and ditto for any more Bible study groups featuring his books, either. Liberal shill.
Personally I have found Gunner to be a fairly good touchstone for detecting “Get Stuffedness” in other folks.
YMMV
The Donald doesn’t Drink, doesn’t roam in bad crowds, and has a Driver so take that Lucado or whoever the heck you are!
BTW thinking you OWN your daughter doesn’t seem to make you very decent to me:-)
In those latter days false prophets will appear. Beware.
They obviously love and respect their father.
And, they stand in awe of him. It’s written on their faces, and in their eyes. That spells volumes to me because that look is EARNED.
I’ve seen that respect and awe on the faces of those who work very closely with him, also.
And then here comes the looser crowd politicians and establishment...to try and tear him down rather than showing how they measure UP. They can’t even come close.
I totally agree with you. :-)
Note that most of the respondents to your thread have a 180-degree view from one of our pesky founding fathers:
Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. --John Adams
In the Bill Clinton era when this forum was in complete agreement with the concept that character matters, FReepers frequently posted and/or agreed with this quote as well as others that demonstrated the wisdom of the vision of our framers. Now they're bonkers over a serial adulterer/strip club owner who has the social graces of a clod just because he keeps blabbering on about a wall with a big beautiful door. He really can shoot someone on Fifth Avenue, you know. He was being completely honest about that.
FR has come a long way, baby. When it comes to hypocrisy, the Dems have nothing on Trumpanzees*.
*I stole this term from a FReeper, but I don't remember who. Kudos to the person who first came up with it.
I’d hate to be your daughter. Show me a parent that doesn’t have a possessive inclination towards their offspring, and I’ll show you a child that will seek any form of offered companionship, good or bad.
Yes, I concur. I’m just kinda surprised when someone reacts to his bluntness as if it wasn’t expected. I think it’s safe to state the humblegunner is proud of his, how do I put it delicately, crassness, and he was a bit restrained in this case.
Do you conclude Max Lucado is a liberal shill from this incident where he had the nerve to criticized your candidate, or do you have some other sources you would like to share for how you came to this conclusion?
I think every candidate probably should have been similarly criticized, my favorite Cruz not withstanding, but I don’t see how this makes him a liberal shill.
The Founding Fathers would’ve failed Lucado’s prissy “Decency Test” in 1800 AD
