President Barack Obama on Tuesday presented a long-awaited plan to Congress to shut down the controversial detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, insisting that keeping the prison open is "contrary to our values."
"It's been clear that the detention center at Guantanamo Bay does not advance our national security," Obama said from the Roosevelt Room at the White House. "It undermines our standing in the world."
The plan, which has been on Obama's agenda since he took office in 2009, hinges on the transfer of between 30 and 60 detainees to U.S. soil, and suggesting several possible locations in South Carolina, Kansas and Colorado. The rest of the 91 detainees at the prison would be sent to other countries.
There are currently 35 detainees eligible for transfer, and the plan

Puts the stick in our eye again!
Any odds of whether or not he tries to turn the base back to Cuba when he makes his visit to the island paradise to see his twin soulmates?
You CANNOT fix retarded.
Obama is still trying to help the Brothers . March 21 his visit to Cuba he will return Gitmo to the Castro Brothers
How many times has he already made this promise?
Republican “leaders” in the Congress are donning their knee-pads even now.
He couldn’t get it done in 7 years. How will he do it with less than a year to go? I don’t see it happening because Congressmen and Senators will hear from their constituents if prisoners are transferred to their state or district. No American, unless they are a radical liberal loon, wants a terrorist so close to where they live.
He was going to close it on his first day in office. Guess he didn’t quite make that promise.
President urkle pledged to close got no his “first year in office.” Natural born LIAR.
Just watch out. We need to hold the Senate in November and gain the Whitehouse to get ANYTHING done.
I’d just reopen another one on a VERY COLD Aleutian Island.
Or an ice flow on the arctic ocean coastline of north alaska.
letting terrorists go free is against our American values.
With the Navy down under 300 ships, none of which run on coal, and given the risk of a YUUUGE increase in the Navy after January, he has to get rid of Gitmo before he leaves.
Bravo Sierra
His last stab during his presidency . . . digging the dagger deeper into the back of America.
why not send the detainees to Hawaii?
Out in the middle of the ocean, and a nice stick in the eye to his beloved home state.
With out the House and Senate I don’t think he can executive order that one.
Why close a US military base back to a communist country 90 miles off shore?
Funny how Odunga only seems interested in saving money when it comes to closing Gitmo. This is the failed president who DOUBLED AMERICA'S NATIONAL DEBT.
