Ted Cruz on Whether He Can Beat Trump in Texas: “I Hope So”
PPD ^ | February 22, 2016 | PPD Elections Staff

Posted on 02/22/2016 2:07:28 PM PST by xzins

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz didn’t offer a confident response Sunday when asked if he was going to defeat Donald Trump in his own home state of Texas. When asked on Meet The Press by host Chuck Todd whether he was going to win Texas, Cruz responded with “I hope so.”

Worth noting, an internal campaign poll leaked to PPD last week showed Cruz trailing the national frontrunner in The Lone Star State by single digits. The interview comes after Cruz finished a disappointing third place in South Carolina. He did his best to put a spin on the fact he finished slightly behind Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and way behind Trump despite the electorate being nearly 7 in 10 evangelical Christians.

Cruz is smart. Losing tends to knock some of the arrogance out of smart people.

I find it hard to even care anymore. I have realized again that regardless of which R wins the Congress is still uni-party and will do nothing. Status quo.

Cruz voters aren’t going to Trump we hate the phony.

Trump dominates with second choices going well into the 50 percent range and beyond. Furthermore, Cruz's support in South Carolina only had 1/3rd of its voters claiming they had made up their mind before hand. 2/3rds decided on Cruz in the final days.

That means Cruz's support is soft and only a small portion represents a core support.

On the other hand, Trump's numbers in South Carolina, of it 2/3rds were solid Trump long before voting began.

However, it is both statewide and by district. It is 108/44/3

108 by district
44 by state
3 by RNC

As they said, this is a campaign in trouble. I think SC really shook them. But I keep going back to two weeks before IA: Cruz had folded like a chair prior to IA and I’m convinced now he only won that with an incredible “Iowa-only” ground game that, had things gone on a week longer, wouldn’t have produced the victory.

I keep going back to the fact that contrary to certain predictions around here, Trump got an amazing 38,500 votes in IA, or 8,000 more than Santorum I think. But Cruz’s guys did a great job of getting out the vote even more (plus the Carson dirty tricks).

Point is, Cruz may not have been as strong as he looked coming out of IA anyway.

But, but, but....wasn’t Ted all FOR all of the VERY “dirty tricks” ( in Iowa, N.H. S.C. ) before now being publicly against them? He must know , now, that his poll numbers STINK ON ICE !

Yup.

Cruz must take Texas. I’m a Cruz guy through and through.

But if he can’t take his home state, he should throw his support to Trump.

But that was in the general election. Cruz isn’t going to make it that far.

If I’m not mistaken, Cruz has made more votes than any other Senator running.

I’m for Trump, but have always liked Cruz
(except when he said: “I dint know I was Canadian till 15 months ago” ... that sounded deceitful).

In any event, I was taken aback by how ‘nasty’ his campaign advertisements had become, (I didn’t think Trump was right when he said he was “nasty”) so it seems it became a self fulfilling prophecy.

I don’t know how much of that was due to Rick Tyler.
But I am glad Cruz fired him this morning.

Hopefully Cruz can regain his composure, run a positive campaign, or at least a negative campaign based on policy differences (not on stuff that happened 17 years ago).

I want the rift to heal, I want Cruz in the Trump administration, I want Cruz to help defeat GOPe Rubio. And if worst comes to worst I want him as president.

I hope he chooses a good new campaign manager

No wonder Ted Cruz has lost a little bit of confidence on winning Texas. I wish him well

Re: Walter ‘On The Fritz’ Mondale

As I recall reading years after the ‘84 re-election of Reagan, the polls indicated that Reagan indeed could have made a total 50 state sweep, however he personally directed that minimal efforts be made in Minnesota because he did not want to humiliate Mondale, which speaks well of Reagan’s character.

Mondale later said with a laugh (referring to the famous quip Reagan made in their second debate regarding Reagan’s age and ability to carry out his presidential duties, i.e., “I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience”), words to the effect, “I knew Reagan had won the election and it was all over as of that very moment.”

Great days.
