Donald Trump's Perfect Foil: Jeb Bush

Donald Trump's Perfect Foil

How the real-estate mogul's attacks against Jeb Bush fueled his rise

Peter Beinart 9:19 AM ET

If Jeb Bush hadn’t run for president, Donald Trump would have had to invent him. The former Florida governor was Trump’s perfect foil. First, because Jeb was prim, proper, and incapable of expressing the rage—especially towards Muslims and Mexicans—that many Republicans currently feel. Second, because Jeb’s candidacy represented the reductio ad absurdum of the campaign finance corruption that Trump, alone among GOP candidates, calls out.

...snip...

In a searing column last week, the former Marine J.D. Vance, author of the forthcoming Hillbilly Elegy, recalls hearing Jeb saying his brother kept “us” safe:

I became Trump’s biggest fan. I wanted him to go for the jugular. I wanted him to inquire whom, precisely, George W. Bush had kept safe. Was it the veterans lingering in a bureaucratic quagmire at the Department of Veterans Affairs or the victims of 9/11? Was it the enlistees from my block back home, who signed their lives on the dotted line while Jeb’s brother told the country to “go shopping”—something kids like me couldn’t afford to do?

It’s not important. We saw the same thing in 2008 and 2012. ‘We have to vote for a liberal, because he is the only one who can beat Obama/Hillary/Whatever.’ Only your strategy failed in 2008 and 2012, yet you are still shilling it. And, even if he won, he’s still a backstabbing liberal who will betray us.

I totally disagree. In 08 and 12, there was no way on earth would there be crossover votes...and there wasn't.

We have a limited field of candidates to choose from. I have come to the conclusion, that any candidate who has chosen to make politics a career, to make politics his sole source of earning money; is in nature a poor statesman.

Someone who is a career politician, by definition... is in it for the money.

It is the sole reason they seek office, it is what they do for a living.

From the field of candidates that we are given, the only one who does not need the job that can win the general, like it or not, it would be one Donald Trump.

It really is that simple.

Trump is FAR, FAR better and more conservative than McLame or Mitt-bot.

You can say that, but it isn't true. Trump is FAR, FAR to the left of McCain and Romney. And he's actually proved to be far less trust worthy. And we knew they weren't trustworthy. Trump will kick the illegals out.

LOL. I don't believe that for a second. Trump even admits it himself from time to time. Remember, Trump criticized Romney for being too tough on illegal immigration Trump is in an industry that depends on illegal immigration. You have my permission to cone make fun of me when Trump builds a wall and is tough on immigration. That day will never come.

You admit you were fooled by the GOP twice before, and you want me to fall for it again? LOL.

He looks like a hostage that has just been released. Perhaps he is.

Trump is a politician., He admitted he gave money to Democrats to get them to do what he wanted. His real estate business was built on big government cronyism.

You are making the same argument. McCain/Romney/Trump is so liberal they will get tons of Democrat votes, because they know who the real Democrat is!

At least we knew McCain or Romney would not switch parties. There is every reason to believe Trump would.

I know my memory isn't what it once was, so perhaps you can remind me which office Trump held and which laws he introduced as well as his voting record.

That's a ridiculous argument. In fact, pathetic.

I'm sure you can come up with something better then that.

...rage “especially towards Muslims and Mexicans”....

&&&
There are few conservatives who have such rage against these groups. Our rage is toward terrorists and toward the facilitation — by our government and by that of Mexico —of unfettered illegal immigration, most of which happens to involve aliens from Mexico.

any candidate that is a true conservative, morally pure, pious, and has walked the straight and narrow...would not stand a chance

we need our own paladin of chaotic malice with a depraved sense of overly vengeful justice that will stand not for giving quarter.

we need our own Son of a Bitch glorious bastard, faults and all. We need to stomp out the treachery of political correctness

We need our own monster.

Ted Cruz may well be as advertised. No one knows. Four years ago, no one knew who he was.

He is young, deploy the Trump Bomb now, ......it is required.

Alas, we have run out of time.

It will take many Ted Cruz clones to restore order in the aftermath.

Very well said. I wish the Cruz supporters would understand this.

Cruz is a choir boy. I don't CARE how "Conservative" he is.....

TED CRUZ IS A CHOIRBOY

He would be crushed and wouldn't be able to accomplish ANYTHING.

Trump will stop the madness. We can't do anything unless we first slam on the brakes.

Anybody that thinks that Ted Cruz will single-handedly usher in a new age of American Conservatism is absolutely delusional.

It will take DECADES to reign in the government corruption, abuse, and socialism. Remember, they've been working at this for 100 years!

Trump serves a purpose. To stop the madness.
