After meeting with Ted Cruz's presidential campaign, Hispanic conservative leaders are expressing concern that the Texas senator is in favor of "self-deportation," an immigration position that helped defeat the last Republican nominee.
Speaking with reporters Monday ahead of the fifth GOP debate, an influential group of Latino Republicans said campaign officials impressed upon them in a closed-door meeting that Cruz supports "attrition through enforcement." That view, one of the leaders said, assumes that once certain enforcement measures are put in place, "there'll be no need for legalization because there will be no undocumented immigrants in the country."
I’m looking at that link and noticed Bob Dole couldn’t even get 1% durign the primary in 1980, end up being the nominee later on in 1996, only to lose in the General
Yeah, and for some reason FOX thinks that what Bob Dole has to say today is relevant.
Hispanic immigration is the poison that will end the USA. In both parties, Hispanics demand open borders and the merger of our homeland with Mexico. Wish Hispanics were capable of assimilation instead.
Please explain touchback amnesty. When and where did Trump refer to that term and the process of touchback amnesty?
Trump hasn’t used that term, but that was the term for it as various GOPe pols pushed it over the last decade.
What Trump has said is that he would “deport” illegals, but then “expedite” their return to the US as newly legalized.
That’s what “touchback amnesty” was by definition: making illegals legal by making them make a quick visit back to their family and homeland. The whole point of it was to somehow sound to the GOP base, who opposed amnesty then as they do now, to as if this wasn’t amnesty. When clearly it was.
Trump has actually been the only pol to successfully sell it to people that way, however.
Sheesh, you failed to mention debt, trade, our military, our vets, and employment. Whether you agree with Trump or not, he’s the only one who has been pounding on these issues since last June. The rest just recite the same old GOP bullshit, and when elected, side with Pelosi and Reid. Look at Paul Ryan! The guy is a traitor to us with the wide open budget deal and supporting Obamatrade. As far as beating The Beast, he will rip her to shreds. Have you noticed The Zipper has been very quiet since Trump threatened to bring out The Stainmaster’s women?
Just remember that Romney’s flip flop on abortion was enough to disqualify him from claiming to be a conservative among many on this board. Yet Trump has a long list of Liberal Democrat credentials and you say that he’s still a conservative. Pardon me if I find that ridiculous.
I’m for self deportation!!!
I hate how Cruz waited until the TPP had enough votes to pass before casting his âNOâ vote :( What he was agin it from the beginning!!! If Drumph had been in the Senate he would have voted for it!!!
Ok so we’re going to nominate a liberal because he’s a good businessman? What was wrong with Romney then?
Cruz won the IOWA thing and came in 3 on the others Rubio has won no primaries and came in 5 in New Hampshire.
I donât trust Cruz or Trump on this issue. Cruz has the better official position now, because Trump is for touchback amnesty.
I do wish Trump would work out the details of his policy on immigration. He is the one who was willing to take on this issue head on and deal with the flack. If it wasn’t for Trump everyone would still have their heads in the sand including Cruz. He is the one I trust to follow through after all the empty promises made now for decades to secure our borders.
Of course the most obvious way to combat the illegal invaders is to deny them jobs and welfare. The penalties for hiring an illegal should be swift and severe. Trump is probably actually trying to refer to providing work permits for agricultural workers which have provided the bulk of fruit pickers etc. for decades. This is something that is already done, but might need to be expanded after millions of people are removed or leave the country. I think that referring to this as “touchback amnesty” is disingenuous. But I do agree that Trump needs to work out a written policy on this important issue.

There FIXED!
Your story of how hard, long and expensive it was to bring your wife here does not ring true. Nothing like that happens in my experience unless immigration has strong reason to think there is a sham marriage.
No, Trump has been quite clear, that he’s talking about specifically allowing “the good ones” to return on an “expedited” basis, newly legalized. That is precisely what touchback amnesty is.
And really there is no reason we should keep having illegals come pick our fruit. Jobs can indeed be made more appealing for Americans—we’ve taken away all incentives for farmers to make them so.
Actually Trump has not been specific at all about the legal means that would let some people now here illegally return. He has also not indicated they would be given preferential treatment over people already on the waiting list. It is certainly not “touchback amnesty”, a term that has an interesting history which is completely unrelated to anything Trump has said. I agree however that Trump should try and get more specific on his immigration proposals.
Trump is the one who got the discussion on immigration going in this contest. He is the one who has been willing to take the heat. On immigration and protecting our borders it is obvious that Trump is the one most likely to do something meaningful.
