Jeb Bush has finally put his presidential campaign out of its misery.
But it wasn't so long ago that Jeb was widely seen as the candidate to beat in the Republican presidential primary. Pundits predicted that Bush was almost as inevitable a nominee as Hillary Clinton was. Commentators cast Bush as the Republican Party's best chance at leaving Clinton shaking in her boots. Between his "rock star name" and the gusher of money he had flowing into his campaign before even announcing, Bush was thought to have the nomination nearly at his fingertips.
Then reality intervened. The former Florida governor has been a pitiable punch line for months.

I don't know whether he's lying or not. But his record suggests that he's not being perfectly frank.
The knock against him is that he is an opportunist demagogue who is simply playing to whatever generates the most applause at the moment. He will say one thing today. Tomorrow, in front of another audience, he will say something else. And he will "mean it" both times.
I think Trump was completely sincere all those years when he was a conventional Manhattan liberal celebrity, aggressively pro-choice, celebrating planned parenthood, supporting Obamacare, and contributing to Hillary, Chuckie, Nancy, et.al. I think he is completely sincere now, playing to Republican crowds, when he adopts to opposite positions. I think he was completely sincere when he approved of the U.S. war in Iraq, and completely sincere when he went Code Pink a couple of weeks ago.
"Sincerity," however, does not mean the same thing to Trump as it does to most of us. Donald does not have principles. He has impulses, and angles to play, and deals to make. Will he sacrifice political popularity to nominate and support conservative Supreme Court nominees, or reform entitlements, or repeal Obamacare? What in his record makes you think there is any principle that he will not abandon as soon as it is convenient to do so?
Please clap.
Another Bush miscalculation.
He figured his wife was his ace in the hole....together they would mine ALL those latino votes (registered or not).....as latinos made threats against Republicans.
Then Trump came along.....w/ plans for a wall.
The Bush family must still chuckle when Bush Sr was queried about racism....and humbly mentioned his Mexican DIL.
It was supposed to be deja vu all over again w/ Jebito.
You mean you can’t win without the base?
SHOCKING!
/s
So how many President Bushes would be enough for you? Five? Ten?
I am more worried about Rubio than Hillary right now!!! GOPe will be just as happy with Rubio !!!!!
Pro Amnesty. Tone deaf.
Please clap
There’s still George P. lurking in Texas.
Actually, he said he didn't need the base to win, did he not?
He's a feckless, clueless elitist that is in bed with both the crony capitalists, and their liberal counterparts.
Yeb! wanted to turn the USA into North Mexico.
The people rejected him because they don’t want that.
My theory is that Jebbie was keeping Columba in the background for the primary season only. Then during the general election, she would be given a higher profile with the expectation that all the Hispanic voters would gush over her and cross over to vote for the Republicans in November. That might explain why Jebbie said he didn’t need the Republican base to win. All he had to do was win the nomination, which he assumed was bought and paid for, and then cruise to an easy general election victory on the strength of the Hispanic crossover vote.
Juan Arbusto is still young enough. He could run for President of Mexico.
Jeb could have and should have dealt with the family issue much faster and more effectively than he did. He was tone deaf on this as well. Here as elsewhere, he completely misread the battlefield on which he was fighting.
Jeb was never my first or second choice, but I do not like the fratricide that has broken out. It is part of the Trump effect, and it will do lasting damage. We still have to win in November. And whatever happens in November, the conservative base still has to build outward to form a governing coalition nationally. Smash-mouth thuggishness is not the way to do this. I have never seen so many in the GOP fall so completely for an utterly personality-driven campaign. This election is not about Trump. He will be gone, one way or another, soon enough. The cancer will remain unless we do the needful on entitlement reform and the cultural/social/religious liberty issues.
Good insight. I also believe Jeb dismissing the base was the product of hearing the Bush family over the years, demean and laugh at conservatives the GOPe despises.

That really irks me about Jeb. Who wants a first family who speaks a foreign language in the White House.
Jethro was in it because of the hubris of his family.
Love to see Donald and Hillary go head to head. The wicked witch will melt away from her own tears.
