So how many President Bushes would be enough for you? Five? Ten?

No. Two are quite enough. But I would not hold Jeb's family against him. The issue was simply that, with an overabundance of highly qualified candidate in a very crowded field, there was no need for the Party to fight those particular crosscurrents. Why take on those ancillary issues when Rubio, Kasich, Christie, etc. were also competing in the establishment lane?

Jeb could have and should have dealt with the family issue much faster and more effectively than he did. He was tone deaf on this as well. Here as elsewhere, he completely misread the battlefield on which he was fighting.

Jeb was never my first or second choice, but I do not like the fratricide that has broken out. It is part of the Trump effect, and it will do lasting damage. We still have to win in November. And whatever happens in November, the conservative base still has to build outward to form a governing coalition nationally. Smash-mouth thuggishness is not the way to do this. I have never seen so many in the GOP fall so completely for an utterly personality-driven campaign. This election is not about Trump. He will be gone, one way or another, soon enough. The cancer will remain unless we do the needful on entitlement reform and the cultural/social/religious liberty issues.
